[talk] The Gwanghwamun Concert: 260,000 Fans, Netflix, and a Historic Night
On March 21, 2026 — just one day after ARIRANG dropped — BTS stood in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace at Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square, and performed their first full-group concert in over three years.
The concert, titled BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG, was exclusively streamed on Netflix, marking the first time the platform live-streamed a concert rather than airing it as a pre-recorded film. The livestream drew 18.4 million global viewers, reaching the weekly Netflix top 10 in 80 countries and the number-one spot in 24 countries.
Attendance estimates exceeded 260,000 fans on-site, stretching more than a kilometer from the main stage — one of the largest gatherings in BTS's career.
LED installations inspired by the South Korean flag, combined with large-scale lighting rigs, framed a set that balanced national symbolism with stadium-level spectacle. Staged in front of the main gate and historic entryway to Seoul's Gyeongbokgung Palace, the choice of location was deliberately connected to the album's themes of heritage and identity.
BTS took over the entire heart of their home city of Seoul to celebrate their return, and the setting underscored that Arirang is in many ways a meditation on the group's cultural identity.
A behind-the-scenes documentary, BTS: The Return, chronicling the making of the album and the group's reunion, premiered on Netflix on March 27, 2026 — just six days later.
For millions of ARMY who had waited patiently through years of military service and solo projects, the Gwanghwamun concert was the moment they had dreamed of. Seven men, one stage, one city, one ARMY — and the entire world watching.
