The Story of BTS Butter and BTS!

Maengbang Beach became widely known to the world after being selected as the filming location for BTS's "Butter" concept photos, which swept the Billboard charts in 2021.

The legendary visuals of the BTS members enjoying a free summer vacation lying on sunbeds under orange and green parasols against the backdrop of the blue East Sea were filmed right here.

As fans from around the world began making pilgrimages to the site following the filming, Samcheok City restored the parasols, sunbeds, beach volleyball nets, and a large 'BTS' letter sculpture exactly as they were at the time of filming to create an official photo zone for the fans. As a result, Maengbang Beach earned nicknames such as 'Butter Beach' or 'BTS Beach' and emerged as Samcheok's hottest tourist destination.

Unfortunately

In January 2024, HYBE, BTS's agency, strongly requested the removal of the sculpture, citing potential unauthorized intellectual property (IP) infringement and violations of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act by the local government.

Consequently, Samcheok City has unfortunately removed all 'BTS' letter sculptures, parasols, sunbeds, and information signs that were installed on the beach.

Although the flashy butter-themed photo zone structures from the past have disappeared, some traces and signs designating it as a "BTS filming location" are being maintained through consultation with the agency.

Although the props are gone, the scenery of the vast sea and fine sandy beach that the members gazed upon remains exactly as it was, and it is said that many fans are still visiting for quiet healing.
