The repercussions of BTS's Grammy boycott are huge.

The members of BTS recently announced that they would not be attending the Grammy Awards. Not long ago, the members declared via their individual social media accounts that they would not be submitting any works to this year's Grammys. They conveyed their wish for music to be heard and loved fully for its own sake, rather than being categorized by specific regions or languages. Fans seem to think that this decision is very much in line with BTS and demonstrates a steadfast commitment.

This collective boycott is being interpreted as a protest against the Grammy’s recently created Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. While the category was established with the intention of celebrating the achievements of Asian pop music, including K-pop, criticism has also been raised that it represents a Western-centric perspective seeking to separate K-pop from major awards. With growing concerns that this could lower their chances of winning a main award, it seems BTS has also firmly raised their voice.

As the controversy escalated, Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammy Awards, personally stepped forward to clarify the situation. He stated that while BTS's decision not to attend was unfortunate, he understood and respected their choice as music creators. He further explained in detail that the Asian Pop category is not intended to discriminate against or divide artists, but rather to celebrate diversity and growth. He added that even if an entry is submitted to this category, it will still be subject to the same evaluation process as major main awards such as Album of the Year or Song of the Year.

This decision is garnering even more attention given that BTS's 5th studio album "Arirang" and its title track "Swim," released this March 2026, are firmly maintaining their long-term success on the Billboard charts. I think it is truly remarkable that they never compromise on their distinct musical values, whether on any stage or at an awards ceremony.
