BTS is garnering significant attention following the news that they will not be submitting a new album to the 2027 Grammy Awards. The members reportedly conveyed their wish via personal social media that music be fully conveyed and loved for its own sake, without being divided by region or language. Given their unrivaled success in the global market, many fans and the public are expressing support for this decision, calling it a move of conviction.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, which organizes the Grammys, released an official statement regarding BTS's decision. While expressing regret over BTS's decision not to participate in this year's Grammy process, he stated that he fully understands and respects their decision as music creators.
The Grammys further explained that the newly established Asian Pop category is intended not for discrimination or separation, but to celebrate the depth and growth of Asian music. They also added that entering a specific genre category does not exclude an artist from eligibility for major awards such as Album of the Year or Record of the Year, and artists can advance to both categories.
However, despite these clarifications, voices of concern remain among fans and the public. Criticism persists that this is an attempt to isolate K-pop artists into a separate category, and there is also a view that it could act as a glass ceiling that makes genuine competition difficult.
