Squid Game 2 spoilers: Why didn't it surpass its predecessor?

Spoiler Alert: This is only recommended for those who have watched "Squid Game Season 2" to the end. This season was a hot topic from start to finish. I watched it with anticipation, wondering "What will be different this time?", but after watching it, I was left with a feeling of unease and a sigh...

Here I will share with you my honest impressions.

1. The Beginning: An Exciting and Anticipatory Start

When Gong Yoo appeared on screen, I felt like, "This is what I've been waiting for season 2 to see!"

His stylish suit, cold expression, and unique charisma were striking, but after this scene the story starts to drag a little.

I understood the scene where Song Ki-hoon (Lee Jung-jae) explained why he wanted to join the game again, but it felt long and boring. To be honest, I couldn't help but think, "Hurry up and start the game!"

2. Starting the game: the first mission and emotional flow

The first game was the familiar "Daruma-san ga Koronda." It was similar to the previous game, but the depiction of the confusion and fear of the participants was just as tense.

However, from this point on, I felt a little unsatisfied. I thought, "Isn't it the same thing again?" ** Also, the backgrounds of the main characters felt weak. Compared to the lingering impressions left by characters like Ari, Sangwoo, and Saebyuk in the previous season, the participants in this season were not as memorable.

The Pairs Game in particular was tense, but the predictable plot of "Oh, these people aren't going to die anyway" hindered immersion. It lacked the heart-stirring emotional explosion of the marbles game in Season 1.

3. Characters: Lack of empathy and immersion

The biggest disappointment with this season was the lack of individuality in the characters .

For example, Yang Dong-geun's character's emotional connection with his mother was appealing, but the storyline felt too conventional. Park Sung-hoon, who was given attention for playing a transgender character, had an important role, but the lack of direction made the character less convincing. His speech and gestures were unnatural, and he was an underwhelming presence even in key moments of the game.

4. Re-voting Systems: Narrative Challenges and Limitations

The re-vote system , a new feature this season, was intriguing, but the repetitive pattern took some of the tension away.

In particular, the fact that the prediction that "it's going to be a replay anyway" was correct every time led to a predictable story. Still, I think it was good that this system allowed us to depict many conflicts and cooperation between the participants.

5. The middle part feels drawn out: the emotional line is broken

Episodes 6 and 7 are the parts where many viewers probably felt like "It seems to be moving along rather slowly...when will it end?"

The story of Song Ki-hoon and his friends trying to escape the game was interesting, but the repeated conflicts and emotional scenes were too long. I understand that it was a plot development to set up the third season, but it was too predictable and boring.

6. Finale: Build-up to Season 3

The final episode was okay overall, but lacked a strong conclusion.

The conflict between the frontman played by Lee Byung-hun and Song Ki-hoon was interesting, but it didn't quite live up to expectations. It was also disappointing to see all the characters leave in a way that made it feel like they were just a stepping stone for the next season.

7. Overall Review: Why Season 2 was disappointing

Season 2 was definitely worth a watch, and while it didn't have the same impact as season 1, it did try to expand the storyline through new ventures.

However, it is true that the lack of appealing characters, predictable storyline, and repetitive gameplay left many viewers disappointed.
