02.

"I finished reading the book you lent me last time! I lost track of time."

“Oh really? That’s good.”

Won Chae-young borrowed a book. That's funny. Judging by the small chuckle next to me, Choi Soo-bin must have had the same thoughts. During our three years of high school together in the library club, I'd never seen Won Chae-young read a book. That's because while Choi Soo-bin and I were reading, she was always the one who'd sit by and snack.

What's important here is that Won Chae-young borrowed the book from Choi Beom-gyu.

So, Won Chae-young borrowed a book from ‘Choi Beom-gyu’.

Won Chae-young likes Choi Beom-gyu. And she's liked him for quite some time. Of course, thanks to Won Chae-young's desperate efforts to hide it, the only people who know about this are me and Choi Soo-bin, who heard about it at a drinking party yesterday.

Won Chae-young was terrified of being caught. She hated the idea of others knowing what she was thinking or feeling. I attribute this to two reasons: first, she couldn't let her cunning be discovered. Second, she wished she had the omnipotence to manipulate people to her own liking. In other words, Won Chae-young feared that others might exploit her, just as she had.

Of course, Won Chae-young doesn't tell me her story either.
Rather, I would be extremely reluctant to know. Because I always have to be by Won Chae-young's side, or rather, beneath her, because I always have to make her shine. That's why Won Chae-young would hate it if I knew her weaknesses. Of course, I don't care at all.

The second question that arises here is: How does Seol Yeo-ju know? Again, the answer lies with me.

I'm very perceptive.

————————————————————————-

Won Chae-young is quick-witted.

Seol Yeo-ju's eyes are shiningDamn it

fast.

The difference here is literally huge.
I've known about Won Chae-young's every effort and every cunning move since I first came here. Even when she used me to evade situations, or even to her own advantage, I stayed silent. The only reason was that I was annoyed.

Being perceptive is more inconvenient than you might think. By synthesizing the other person's facial expressions, the pitch of their voice, their unusual tone of voice, and the flow of the situation, you quickly discern their intentions and what they want from you. There's absolutely nothing more annoying than that. Do you truly understand the discomfort of wanting to say "A" but the other person wanting "B"?

I find everything annoying, so I stubbornly insist on option A. If I were to respond with B to suit the other person, I'd be stuck in that uncomfortable situation forever. But if I were to respond with A, I'd just be criticized for being tactless and escape the discomfort. That's why I've become someone who's incredibly perceptive but oblivious.

I have a rule of thumb that I have developed over the past 20 years.

01. A quick-witted person recognizes a quick-witted person.

02. People who are truly perceptive pretend not to be. That's why Won Chae-young is a person who is clumsily perceptive to me. She's desperate to show off her perceptiveness. Choi Soo-bin is also quite perceptive, but she doesn't notice it herself, so I'll pass. And I've only seen one person who fits this rule.

As I watched Won Chae-young, who was in love, with curious eyes, their conversation was about to end. Then, Na Jae-min, whether intentionally or accidentally, threw an uppercut.

“Then, do you think that the main character’s mother, Nadalin, had no choice?

"..uh? "

It was a perfect victory for Choi Beom-gyu. Won Chae-young, who said the white part was paper and the black part was writing, didn't even bother to read it properly. Or perhaps she was thinking of Choi Beom-gyu as she looked at the white paper.

"I wrote a report on that topic, and it's quite interesting. Am I being taken aback by your sudden question? Sorry."

“Ah.. that”

Then return the book after class. - Choi Beom-gyu turned his head forward with a smile and started talking to Choi Yeon-jun, who was sitting next to him.

Won Chae-young, her face visibly flustered, quickly composed herself and left the classroom. Her pride must have taken a considerable hit. She'd always been the one to harass people, but now she'd been slapped by someone she liked. Even if it wasn't intentional, she felt the sting.

“Choi Beomgyu, is he doing that on purpose? Doesn’t he know that Won Chaeyoung likes him?”

Choi Soobin, who had been giggling while looking at Won Chaeyoung like that, whispered softly to me. I, who was organizing my lecture materials, laughed in disbelief and whispered softly.

“No way”

So what I'm saying is... this is a rule. I've only seen one person who fits this rule.

Choi Beom-gyu is also very perceptive

Rule 1. A quick-witted person recognizes a quick-witted person.

Choi Beom-gyu has a really good sense of humor.
