Interpretation of the ending of the movie Hope! Spoiler alert, plot, and review
An honest review of Director Na Hong-jin's film *Hope*, the most anticipated movie of 2026! From the whirlwind plot spanning 156 minutes to an interpretation of the shocking ending, post-credits scene details, and a genuine review full of spoilers, check it out right now!
1. The first 60 minutes are legendary, an honest review of the movie <Hope>
To start with my overall impression, it is a movie that makes you think, "What did I just watch?" but has a strange addictive quality that keeps you thinking about it.
In particular, the opening sequence at the beginning of the first 60 minutes was so immersive that it is no exaggeration to say it truly marked a milestone in the history of Korean cinema. Cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo did an incredible job of capturing the eerie and desolate atmosphere unique to the Demilitarized Zone.
However, the CG quality, which was the subject of much talk even before the release, feels a bit unbalanced, just as the rumors said.
The graphics were a bit noticeable in scenes like the chase on the empty highway. There was also a strange sense of humor(?) where a horse was always running ahead of an alien creature faster than a cheetah. Still, thanks to the acting stunts of Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, and actress Jung Ho-yeon making her screen debut, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen!
2. The Raid on a Peaceful Village, Spoiler-Filled Plot
The story begins in Hopo Port, a quiet port village near the DMZ. Police officer Beom-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and hunter Seong-gi (Jo In-sung) discover a cow brutally mutilated and dead in the middle of the road.
While the village youths are away putting out a fire, a giant alien monster named 'Vamigir', over 3 meters tall, appears and starts hunting humans very intelligently using objects. Dispatched police officer Seong-ae (Jeong Ho-yeon) eventually succeeds in capturing(?) the monster by blowing off its leg with a grenade launcher, but the village is already in chaos.
Meanwhile, Seong-gi and his party, having discovered a giant spaceship in the mountains, encounter a powerful alien warrior He is brutally massacred by Maveillo (Michael Fassbender), Jor (Alicia Vikander), and others, and barely survives with only his genitals, engaging in a life-or-death struggle.
3. The culprit behind all the incidents, shocking trolling
But it turned out the cause of this terrible alien attack was something else entirely. What resident Yang Bae (Eum Moon-seok) at the police station had said—which everyone thought was just nonsense—was actually the truth!
Yangbae, whose hobby is collecting mannequins, shot and killed 'Kali,' a young green alien who appeared in the village a few days ago, and kept her in his freezer... Yes, that's right.
The aliens didn't come to invade; they were just searching the village and confronting humans to find the young son of the alien empress (Zor) whom Yangbae had killed. That's total trolling, isn't it?
4. A Dazed Narrative, The Ending and Post-Credits Scene of the Movie Hope
Beom-seok, Seong-ae, and Yang-bae's group set out to rescue Seong-gi and engage in a breathtaking chase with Maveillo on the highway. Seong-gi takes down Maveillo with an epic action sequence where he climbs atop a moving police car. Just as they were saying, "Wow, we won!"... due to Yangbae's ridiculous mistake while driving, the car crashed into a signpost, and Seonggi died instantly and pointlessly on the spot. Seriously, the entire audience in the theater let out a collective sigh at this scene.
At the same time, the alien mothership hovering in the sky explodes violently and crashes to the ground. The aliens Jor and Maveillo, witnessing the death of the son and the explosion of the mothership, fall into despair. The surviving protagonists frantically flee through this chaos, and as Empress Jor orders Maveillo to "change fate," the movie reaches an unsettling yet intense ending.
Wait! Cookie Scene Info 🍪
There is just one post-credits scene right before the end credits roll! It shows Sung-ki (Jo In-sung), who was thought to have died after hitting a sign, thankfully surviving and limping away. (Phew, what a relief...)
5. For Whom Is Hope? Interpretation of the Ending of the Movie Hope
The movie title 'HOPE' carries a double meaning. It is the name of a deserted, secluded village that Director Na Hong-jin visited during his travels in North America, but it is also closely connected to the film's message.
As the movie progresses toward the latter half, the way the roles of perpetrator and victim are instantly swapped is a chilling highlight. At first, humans appeared to be victims being unilaterally massacred, but in reality, the human (Yangbae) was the 'perpetrator' who had first killed and stuffed the alien's precious child.
The scene at the end, where the aliens pledge a new 'hope' while the humans converse in confusion without knowing why, evokes a deep sense of remorse and guilt. Mixed with Director Na Hong-jin's signature black comedy elements (such as Lim Hyun-sik's toilet humor), it can be interpreted as a truly brilliant ending designed to make the audience chuckle while simultaneously feeling a strange sense of guilt and unease in the back of their minds.
6. Movie <Hope> Q&A
Q1. Will there be sequels to the movie *Hope*, specifically parts 2 and 3?
A1. I heard that Director Na Hong-jin originally envisioned this story as being longer and has left open the possibility of expanding it into a trilogy! However, given the production budget exceeding 100 billion won, he commented that a sequel can only be produced if the film successfully surpasses the domestic break-even point of 7 million viewers and generates significant profit. Since Seong-gi survived in the post-credits scene, I think a sequel is guaranteed if the film is a box office success!
Q2. How do actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander appear?
A2. The two of you are actually a top Hollywood star couple, and it became a hot topic as you became the first couple to appear together in a Korean film! You appear as key figures of the alien forces in the movie and exude a tremendous aura. However, unfortunately, it is said that there are no scenes where the two actors appear on screen together due to different filming schedules.
Q3. Is it unpleasant or very scary after watching the movie?
A3. It feels less heavy and ambiguous than Director Na Hong-jin's previous works, *The Wailing* or *The Yellow Sea*. According to the director, now that he has gotten older, he intentionally included many funny gag scenes throughout for mainstream entertainment. However, since most of the dialogue consists of foul language and there are depictions of brutal slaughter by aliens, those who are completely unable to watch gore should exercise caution!
