Soldier arrested for molesting 6-year-old girl in campsite tent while drinking

Chuncheon District Court, 2nd Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Kim Seong-rae) announced on the 22nd that it sentenced Mr. A (25), who was indicted on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (Sexual Violence Punishment Act), to 2 years and 6 months in prison, suspended for 4 years.

Person A, a soldier belonging to a certain unit of the Army stationed in Gangwon Province, was brought to trial on charges of forcibly molesting Ms. B (6) by touching specific parts of her body about 20 times while she was lying down inside the tent and sitting next to her while camping with her family at a campsite in Yanggu on the night of October 8, 2022. Person A was reportedly drunk at the time.

The court pointed out that "the crime in this case was that the defendant forcibly molested the victim, who was only 6 years old, while intoxicated," and "considering the circumstances and method of the crime, the nature of the crime is serious. The mental pain suffered by the victim also appears to have been significant."

However, the court stated, "The defendant, a first-time offender with no criminal record, has admitted to the crime from the investigation stage all the way to this courtroom," and "We decided the sentence after considering the fact that the victim's legal representative has expressed his intention not to punish the defendant through an amicable agreement."
