“I’m 163cm but I want to lose 40kg” Teenagers’ extreme diet, only eating water and salt

Teenagers who pursue extreme skinny bodies through starvation-level diets have become a social problem. These are extreme diets where the 'height-less body' figure, calculated by subtracting weight (kg) from height (cm), is over 120.

Teenagers who do not hesitate to fast also drink mineral water instead of plain water to replenish nutrients, or take nutritional supplements. As of the 10th, there are over 1,000 posts on Instagram with the hashtag (#) 'water fasting'. X (formerly Twitter) is also overflowing with related reviews such as, "When I do water fasting, I feel dizzy more than hungry", and "I was diagnosed with a problem with my lymph nodes at the hospital, but I can't stop water fasting."

Professor Shim Kyung-won of the Department of Family Medicine at Daemok Hospital in Daejeon pointed out that “intermittent fasting should not last more than 16 hours, but if teenagers fast for more than that, it can have dangerous consequences.”

Professor Lim Myeong-ho of Dankook University's Department of Psychology said, "Because an overly thin body has become an ideal goal through social media and other means, people have become obsessed with extreme dieting," and "It seems that teenagers with low self-esteem are trying to achieve a sense of accomplishment through a thin body."
