Who would’ve guessed that the day they reunited that their lives would end up at the very beginning... actually if you ever were to meet a couple who knew from first meeting they were destined to be together... you would probably say, “No way”. Especially if you didn’t know well their personalities or the experiences they had in their lives before meeting one another!
Key grew up in a somewhat sheltered environment because all his life he had everything materially. However, his family life was non-existent except for his loving grandma Kim Ae-Ri who to Key was his only family until he was 10 years old. Fortunately it was his grandma’s love that helped him to be a kind and caring person. As a result, Key made friends easily and the boys, namely, Jonghyun, Minho, Onew and Taemin were to become not only his best friends but they became family, brothers really.
Baby on the other hand, was sadly less fortunate. Her parents died tragically in a car accident when she was just a baby. She had no close relatives who could care for her so she was placed in a foster home and soon after she was adopted by a couple who were unable to have children of their own when she was only 16 months old. Unfortunately, her adopted parents divorced and neither of them wanted to take responsibility of Baby so at the tender age of 5, Baby was returned to the foster care home. Several years passed and at the age of 12, Baby ran away from the foster home and she ended up living on the streets of Hong Kong. She stole and begged to survive.
One day as she was imagining what it would be like to eat with a fork and knife again. A boy who decided to skip school that day stumbled upon her and watched as she stole some food from a local store. She was just about to walk out the door when he suddenly appeared in front of her to stop her from leaving as he wanted to report her stealing. However, their eyes met and he was unable to to move or say anything as if time had suddenly stopped as they stared at each other. Baby without flinching went into ‘flight mode’ and ran out the front door, while he stood bewildered that he had just froze as if a spell had been cast upon him! He realised she had got away that he ran after her. Just as she thought she was safe in her hideout, Baby stopped running. She was just about to take a bite of her stolen food when the boy who had ran after her found her... he then realised she was a street kid!
From that day on, he became like a big brother to Baby. He wanted to help her and asked why she was living on the streets? Baby replied she had no family and hated the foster home so she ran away. She asked him why do you care? He wasn’t sure why as well he just felt that it wasn’t right for a kid, especially a girl to be alone and living on the streets. So he asked if she would come live with him and his family? She was scared because she was afraid that his family would just take her back to the foster home. But he promised her that he wouldn’t let that happen... and he kept his promise!
A few months later, Baby became an adopted younger sister of Kai, who was 3 years older than her. Baby had a new family. Sadly, misfortune seemed to follow Baby and only a few years later, just a day before Kai’s 18th birthday. Tragedy struck and Kai’s parents died in a boating accident. Baby knew all too well the sadness that now befell Kai. Baby wanted to run away again!
