Chapter 21. The Whale's Fall
*
“Why isn’t the airship taking off?”
“It comes out at night here. Let’s take a look around here.”
Yeoju and Jimin, using their ample savings as a springtime starter, wandered the streets. The unfamiliar hard stone pavement and the paved dirt paths now felt as free as the spring breeze. Autumn seemed to have arrived, and the two children were in this cool, breezy city.
“Let’s sit down on this lawn and rest.”
The tower, a skeleton of a building, perhaps even a skeleton of its own, stretched toward the sky. The heroine was deeply in love with that skeletal tower. She had come to Paris to find Taehyung, but Paris, to her, was a city of dreams. Paris itself wasn't a dream. Paris gave her a dream.
Yeoju had once heard from the mansion's servants that the three brothers of the countess, all of whom had Asian blood, had names of Asian descent. They had English names, too, and among them, Taehyung's was Carter. It was an unforgettable name. When she dreamed of lakes and flowers, Taehyung and Carter were the only names she knew.
"carter..!!"
One day, as she sat on the lawn, enjoying the breeze like a perfect forget-me-not, the name "Carter" rang in her ears. The name, etched in her ears like the wind, suddenly caused her to grab Jimin's hand and stand up. A chill autumn breeze blew past.
“I heard Taehyung’s name.”
“Really? Where??”
There was no catching the wind that had already passed. An airship rose above the darkening sky. As it glided over the heroine's head, she, entranced, took steps in its direction. And there,
“It’s cold. I should have worn a scarf.”
“You look pretty with your neck exposed.”
I faced Taehyung's beaming face. His face, so distant and distant I thought I'd forget, was beaming brightly. Knowing the reason for his smile, Yeoju couldn't get any closer to Taehyung. Ariana was beside him. Suddenly, Ariana's words came to mind.
"You're going to Paris, too. I have someone I love in Paris, too."
Does he love you too, Ariana? He couldn't remember Ariana's answer to that question. Carter smiled at Ariana, as if he'd found a perfectly matched pair. His smile was brighter than the one he'd seen in the garden. Behind them, the airship's final destination was visible. The whale, gliding through the sky, was now completely grounded.
