Brand of the Desert

First syllable

The echo of my new name hung beautifully in the tent's still air. It gently trembled over the heavy iron armor plate beneath my fingertips.

"Chaewon." For the first time in my life, I tried saying those syllables out loud. My low, subdued voice came out carefully, as if tripping over unfamiliar vowels. For my whole life, I had been nothing more than an nameless mark on a ledger. Just an asset drifting between cold desert winds and wooden pillars, something that could be discarded at any time. But the moment I heard this name leave his lips, everything changed. The heavy texture of the words that slipped from my lips felt like a solid anchor, like a shield of sturdy identity dropping into place to erase the numbers of my past once and for all.

Hyunjin's dark eyes softly narrowed, tracing the edges. A low, unbelievably alluring smile spread across his handsome face as he watched my lips move. Under the amber lamplight, the unfamiliar flush still warm on his cheekbones glowed even more gently. After his thumb gave the side of my nape one last reassuring squeeze and lingered there, his hand slowly fell away to rest by his side.

"It suits you perfectly." he murmured. His low voice, carrying absolute devotion, was rich and unwavering.

I stepped closer to him. I didn't want the heavy, overwhelming threat of the front lines to intrude on our private space. I reached out to lift his final piece of armor: the dark, heavy steel breastplate embossed with the city faction's crest. The distance between us was gone completely. As I slid the heavy metal plate into place over his broad shoulders, our chests brushed lightly against each other with every breath.

I carefully moved my fingers to tug the leather straps tight. I fastened the heavy iron plate so it would fit his frame perfectly. Even through the armor, I could clearly feel the fast, powerful thudding of his heart beating straight into my palm.

"A basin is open, expansive terrain." I whispered, lifting my head through my tangled hair and locking eyes with him. Even amid the noise of the camp outside, I deliberately broke the syllables apart with exaggerated clarity so he could grasp every detail. "The desert tribes will grow arrogant the moment they see your front line retreat from the gorge. They'll break formation to pursue you, and in that instant their flank will be completely exposed. That's when you close the shield wall."

Hyunjin let out a low, slow breath. In his dark eyes, as he absorbed my final strategy deep in his chest, a spark of fierce pride as a soldier flashed by. He reached out. His large gauntleted hand came up to gently cradle the back of my head, and his fingers burrowed deep into my hair to tilt my face upward.

"I'll drive them straight into the middle of the basin, Chaewon-ah." Hyunjin whispered. His deep, heavy voice calling my name was packed with sharp, intense possessiveness, sending a shiver racing all the way to my toes. He settled with barely a breath's distance from my lips, sharing fully in the same warm breath between us. "Stay within the royal guard's perimeter. I'll end this war and bring you back to that peaceful inner courtyard, I swear."

He lowered his head and erased the last remaining sliver of space. His lips caught mine, giving me a short, heavy, deeply comforting farewell kiss. It was a kiss so intense it seemed to steal even the last of the air in my lungs. Then he turned on his heel, threw the canvas flap wide open, and strode out into the moonlit roar to lead the march.
