Brand of the Desert

In front of the castle gate

The steady, rhythmic rumble of the wooden wheels rattling along the dirt road sent a low, continuous vibration straight through the plush velvet seats of the imperial carriage. Outside, the vast open sand dunes of the borderlands were slowly receding behind us, replaced by the steep, rugged rocky canyon roads that led directly to the central capital. The carriage interior was cramped, secluded, and dim. Thanks to the thick, heavy silk curtains blocking out the harsh afternoon sun, we were perfectly hidden from the eyes of the cavalry units passing by.

I sat directly across from Hyunjin, gripping the hem of my plain, unremarkable travel hanbok tightly between my fingers to keep myself steady against the carriage's rough swaying. I had none of the luxurious silk worn in the palace, none of the nobles' vivid dyed fabrics. My clothes, bearing the unmistakable traces of our urgent departure, were purely practical, dust-stained, and reflected the reality of the long journey we had left behind.

Hyunjin sat upright on the velvet seat, yet he looked unbelievably exhausted. He had had no time to change into the imperial court uniform, no moment at all to celebrate his new title. He was still wearing the thick, dark leather underarmor he had on at the front lines, and the gray ash stains of the battlefield over that leather only made his broad, sturdy shoulders seem even heavier. The gold imperial seal resting weightily on the small wooden table between us made him seem more trapped than he had ever looked on the battlefield. In the dim space, his sharp, dark eyes were fixed entirely on my face, his gaze tracking every change in my expression as he concentrated fully on silent communication.

"The emperor's decree didn't just change my title." He finally spoke. His deep voice dropped into a low, quiet whisper that barely carried over the clatter of the carriage wheels. He reached across the narrow space and laid his large, warm hand firmly over mine, steadying my trembling fingers on the velvet seat. "That decree rewrote what you will be in this central court too, Chaewon."

I lifted my head, and my breath settled thinly as the quiet, low rasp of my continuing voice cut clearly through the silence inside.

"What does that mean for us?"

Hyunjin's jaw tightened. As the carriage jolted over a large rock outcrop, he leaned his upper body close to me, and the broad expanse of his chest pressed huge against me as a fierce, intense protectiveness surged across his handsome features.

"It means you'll be entering this imperial palace as the new Crown Princess." As he explained gently, his thumb moved slowly and firmly in circles over the back of my hand, as if calming my racing pulse. "The corrupt power blocs in the capital are furious that a frontier general has inherited the throne. They'll desperately look for any tiny pretext to challenge my right of succession. Which means the moment we pass through those gates, they'll be targeting you right away. They'll dig through your past from top to bottom, trying to uncover your family and your rank so they can make the case that you don't deserve to be the Crown Princess."

He stopped speaking, then slid down from his seat and knelt fully on both knees on the carriage floor directly in front of me. His massive body pressed close over me, firmly trapping me in the space between the backrest cushions, and his other palm came up to gently cup one side of my face.

"We're walking straight into a nest of vipers right now," Hyunjin whispered. Hot, labored breaths brushed my skin as he held my eyes with absolute devotion. "But I took this crown not so they could lay a hand on even a single strand of your hair. The moment we arrive in the capital, you become this empire's future. And my shield will stand directly in front of you, protecting you without leaving so much as a trace until this court is completely cleansed."

The heavy weight of his protective promise sank deep into my chest within the cramped carriage, easing the taut tension inside me completely. I looked down at the rough feel of his ash-stained hand cupping my face, set in stark contrast against the imperial carriage's luxurious velvet cushions.

"I'm not afraid of their nest of vipers at all," I whispered softly. There was a cold, unshakable strength in my low, quiet voice. I reached out and gripped his wrist firmly with my fingers to keep his hand steady against my cheek, my eyes locked completely in his dark, intense gaze. "Let them dig up all the dirt they want, Hyunjin. Desert tribes couldn't break me, and a few corrupt politicians certainly can't. Especially... when I'm the one drawing the shield line and commanding your frontline formation."

A low, breathless chuckle slipped from between Hyunjin's lips. The fierce, protective tension that had locked his body rigid melted away in an instant, and his gaze filled with a wave of complete, dazed captivation. He leaned forward and gently rested his forehead against mine in the dim light, as the carriage rocked heavily and rhythmically and our quick breaths mingled perfectly.

"I was worrying needlessly with a genius strategist by my side," he murmured affectionately, leaving a soft lingering warmth against my skin.

The moment the steady friction of the carriage wheels began to slow noticeably, he slid back into the velvet seat beside me. The steady murmur of the thousands of neatly marching soldiers outside the carriage fell at once into disciplined, hollow echoes, and the sounds rang out in every direction against the massive, towering ramparts.

Hyunjin reached out and carefully lifted the carriage window's thick silk curtain with his long fingers. In that instant, a sharp, blinding wash of golden afternoon sunlight poured straight through the darkness inside the carriage.

I leaned forward, and the moment I looked through the narrow opening, I caught my breath hard in my throat.

The central capital of the empire stood on a vast stretch of land rising majestically between rugged, jagged mountain ranges. It was perfectly encircled on all sides by enormous, overwhelming white stone fortress walls soaring into the sky, and atop the pointed bastions stood rows of hundreds of elite imperial guard troops, each holding high the crimson banners of their unit camps in stark contrast to the carriage interior. The great golden roofs of the inner palace, gleaming brilliantly in the strong light of the setting sun, were unimaginably beautiful yet utterly cold and imposing.

The heavy iron-reinforced gate at the front line boundary groaned open slowly with a low, strained sound, and giant chains clanged violently as the carriage finally crossed the threshold and entered fully inside the imperial palace's inner perimeter.

Hyunjin let the heavy curtain drop back into place with a soft thud, once again sealing the space completely inside a protective shadow. He reached out across the small wooden table again and carefully slid his long fingers between mine, taking my hand to bind ours together tightly as one. His grip was firm, solid, and utterly unwavering.

"We're here," Hyunjin whispered. His deep voice settled into a low, commanding breath, announcing the official start of the war for the throne. "Lift your head high, Crown Princess. The court is waiting for us."
