Brand of the Desert

Under a stranger's roof

The suffocating smell of desert dust was completely gone. In its place, a subtle, unfamiliar cool sweetness filled the space, mingled with the scent of crushed grass blades and warm water, with a faint earthy note. A soft breeze brushed my cheek. After years spent in the stifling, cramped slave barracks, this gentle, rippling sensation against my skin felt entirely foreign.

I squinted and slowly opened my eyes. My vision was hazy and blurred in the warm morning sunlight filling the surrounding space.

I tried to move my body, but a stabbing pain shot through my entire back, cutting off my breath and forcing out a silent groan. Looking down, I saw that the tattered, filthy rags from my days as a captive were gone. In their place, I was wearing light, simple white cotton underwear, and thick, clean cloth had been wrapped tightly around my wrists in several layers, soothing the wounds left by the heavy iron shackles.

As I looked around and tried to remember where I was, I realized I had never seen a building like this before. It was an unbelievably large room, but there were no rough, split logs like the slave barracks, or the hard mud walls of a guard post. The floor beneath the thick bedding was made of smooth, polished wooden planks that shone softly in the light, spotless, with not a speck of dirt or sand. The walls weren’t solid at all. They were enormous, delicate panels of pale, translucent cloth stretched taut over wooden frames, letting the morning sunlight pass straight through. The ceiling arched high above my head, supported by huge, dark wooden pillars, making the whole space feel as wide as a canyon yet completely shut off from the outside world and safe.

Before I could even begin to make sense of this strange place, low, tense voices from outside beyond the delicate lattice panels caught my attention, and I froze. The deep voice I heard belonged to someone I didn’t know at all, and its low, rich tone sent a fleeting chill across my skin.

"The Emperor's decree is absolute." Outside, in the open air, a firm middle-aged voice said in a heavy, sharp tone. "To protect the child's status from the desert tribes searching the border, you must register them into your family immediately. A strategic marriage is the only legal way to free that child and prevent their execution."

A heavy, oppressive silence followed. Only the rustling of leaves outside filled the gap.

"I am the commander leading the Border Shield, not a politician." The strange, deep voice snapped back. Through the lattice panels, his words carried a sharp, reluctant edge. He did not sound like a savior. He sounded like a man trapped by a burden. "I do not take a bride out of duty, nor do I bind a stranger to my family name simply to settle the court's disputes."

"General, if the central court finds out that a runaway slave of unknown status is hiding on your territory, your military command will collapse completely." The older voice pressed harder, growing even sharper. "You must accept the decree. For the safety of this region as well."

Heavy, slow footsteps crossed the flat wooden corridor outside the room. Before long, a long, defeated sigh slipped from the foreigner's mouth, and the breath rang clearly through the thin walls.

"Understood." The mysterious general muttered in reluctant annoyance. His voice, accepting the forced alliance, was taut with restrained assent. "Prepare the wedding. But until the court seal is affixed, keep that child in the inner room only. I don't want any prying eyes anywhere near this place."

The low mattress sank beneath his weight as he sat down on the edge of the bedding, right beside me. As he moved carefully, his clothes made a rustling sound, and then he reached out. His large hand moved with astonishing, unexpected gentleness, and his warm fingers lightly caught my wrist and turned it over. He was focused entirely on examining the clean bandages wrapped around my raw wrist.

The moment his fingertips brushed lightly along the edge of the cloth, a wave of fear suddenly surged through me. My shoulders tensed in an instant, and my toes dug into the sheets beneath the thick blanket. I tried to pull my arm back from his hand.

He noticed my sudden fear right away. He stopped what he was doing. His hand remained beneath my wrist, offering a firm, reassuring warmth, but his grip loosened completely, no longer forcing me to stay.

He lifted his head. In the bright morning light, his dark, sharp eyes met mine fully.

"Hey," he said softly. His voice was full yet completely steady. As he tilted his head slightly, a gentle, reassuring calm spread across his expression, cutting straight through my defenses. "You’re safe here. No one in this house will hurt you. I’ll protect you."

The heavy, protective weight in his words hit me hard, and the taut tension pressing on my chest cracked just a little. I swallowed the dry desert dust still lodged in my throat and stared at his handsome face. The afterimage of the conversation I’d just heard outside was echoing loudly in my mind.

I barely managed to find my voice before my courage slipped away. A strained, hushed sentence spilled from between my lips.

"What happens... with the marriage?"
