CHERRY BLOSSOM

On the day of the trip, I left for the airport with both hands full of heavy luggage. It was always Woojin's job to take care of Yeoju, who was not good at traveling, and although Woojin always did the same for two, I was still happy. I watched Yeoju running with a brisk pace, my heart brimming with excitement. When we made eye contact, she smiled brightly. She was still a newlywed who would die of happiness just by looking at him.

Woojin and Yeoju got married in the spring. Before their wedding, their dates would always be canceled or postponed because they were both busy, but in the spring, there were many days when it felt like a lie that they had free time. So, on the days of their dates, cherry blossom petals would always fall, and Yeoju liked to stand under the cherry blossom tree and take pictures every time they went on a date. Even after arriving in Jeju Island, Yeoju, who couldn't give up on taking pictures, stood under the tree where pink petals were falling and waited for Woojin to take a picture for her. At that time, Woojin grumbled, saying that there were many cherry blossoms in Seoul, so why did he have to come all the way to Jeju Island to take pictures of cherry blossoms? He even got slapped, asking how the cherry blossoms in Seoul and Jeju looked the same. In response to Yeoju's words, Woojin took a picture for her, and while she was busy taking pictures, he picked up a cherry blossom and put it between the thick book he had brought. He planned to make it into a bookmark and give it to Yeoju as a gift when he returned home.

They left the airport and arrived at the beach of Jeju Island. Woojin felt his heart melt as he watched the sparkling, blue sea and Yeoju running around it. They played in the water together, leaning on each other's shoulders and chatting until the sun set. As the sky gradually grew darker, it was Woojin who suggested they get up first. But for some reason, Yeoju didn't want to leave. Woojin sensed that Yeoju's mood was a little different than during the day and asked her if she felt any pain. She simply said she felt a little uneasy and stared at the sea. Then, with a smile on her face, she said she must have been too rested lately and followed Woojin. Woojin was worried about Yeoju's awkward, forced smile, but he thought that she might be tired after walking around all day and planned to go to the hotel and relieve her fatigue.

On the way back to the accommodations. As soon as they got into the car, rain poured down. However, the two of them drove along the coastal road, playing a cheerful song and humming along. It was a method they devised because they knew that even if the weather was gloomy, they couldn't feel as gloomy as the weather. Yeoju, enjoying the rest she had felt for a long time, smiled with her signature smile, and Woojin smiled back. And this was the last time they would look at each other and smile like this.

Boom! He lost consciousness with a loud noise. When he opened his eyes, he was drenched in rain, his mind wandering. A pungent smell filled his nostrils, and he felt as if a liquidโ€”either rain or bloodโ€”was flowing from his head. When Woojin looked at Yeoju, his world felt like it was crumbling. Judging by her appearance, which seemed severely injured, Woojin finally grasped the situation, and once he did, he lost his composure. It was a car accident. And the rain made it even worse. Woojin desperately called Yeoju's name. He didn't even notice the hoarseness in his throat, and he simply kept repeating the three letters, "Yeoju." However, no matter how much he called, Yeoju wouldn't look at him with her usual playful expression. She simply blinked her eyes, her face flushed red, and her eyes remained fixed on Woojin's face. Yeoju, who had been blinking, stopped and closed her eyes. Woojin's eyes shook violently, and his heart pounded. When he carefully placed his hand on Jeonghan's cheek, he had already turned into a spring star. Sadly, God did not help Woojin. He simply continued to pour down rain.

The evening after the accident, the sky was clear as if it had never rained, and the stars were bright and beautiful, just like Yeoju's eyes.
