[Double-edged sword]

EP 4. [Hey]

"···No, this isn't it. That's right! A dream···, it seems like I haven't woken up from the dream."

But no matter how much she pinched and slapped her cheek, the blood stains on her hands and the sight of the king, who might have been conscious, did not disappear.

"This can't be real, it can't be...!"

As the female protagonist was mumbling the same thing in a daze, the commander of the Office of the Inspector General, who had seen the female protagonist's reflection beyond the paper window, shouted from afar.

"Assassin! Assassin! Protect Your Majesty!"

"There's no time for this, I need to get out of the palace first..."

The female protagonist, half-conscious and out of her mind, was trudging along a corner of a market street when a swarm of soldiers swarmed her and locked her in a room. She quickly hid, fearing being caught, and was unable to check the room's contents.

After the guards left the room, the female protagonist, who came out to check the room, had no choice but to further close the hood that was half-covering her face.

"Eggmoney, you're an assassin, an assassin!"

"And on top of that, they're assassins! Oh my..."

The complaints that the women were spouting out all felt like they were all aimed at her, so she ended up running away.

It had already been two months since the heroine abandoned her life as an assassin, living a wandering life, and found a dilapidated, abandoned house on a mountainside. No, it was closer to being dead than alive. A life of a wreck, doing absolutely nothing, barely eating one meal a day.

As life became increasingly difficult, and the female protagonist, who had been contemplating suicide hundreds of times a day, suddenly spoke softly with a haggard face.

"···Your Majesty, what happened to you?"

Since there was no one there, the answer would not come from anywhere, so the female protagonist decided to go out and find the answer to that question on her own.

The female protagonist, who remembered what she had seen in the room and thought she should disguise herself as a man to avoid arousing suspicion, put on a robe, a hat, and put a hat on her head before heading to the market.

The noisy and bustling market scene, as before, brought Yeoju to tears. The sunlight, which rarely penetrated the mountains, suddenly entered her eyes, dazzling her eyes.

But something was strange. There was an inexplicable gloom in the noisy market.

Even people wearing mourning clothes and walking the streets were seen everywhere. Feeling suspicious, the female protagonist asked an older man passing by.

"···Why is the market so gloomy? And who are those people in mourning clothes?"

"The room was posted a few days ago, but you still don't know? It's probably still posted, so go and see."

The woman frowned slightly at the man's curt reply and headed toward the room. There, a slightly grimy room had been touched by countless people.

"······."

The heroine, who had seen the room, could only remain silent. No, it wasn't silence. She couldn't open her mouth to suppress the tears welling up inside her.

The woman, who had left the market with a nauseous feeling, headed toward the mountain house where she had stayed for two months. She looked around as if someone was chasing her, then went inside.

Only after she had locked the door to her room did the female protagonist lose the strength in her legs and collapse on the spot.

"···Alas, how···. How, did you leave so vainly······."

The heroine, who began to shed tears thinking of the king, began to utter words that no one could hear.

"I am... a woman who deserves to die. I sold everything that was my parents' everything, their pride..."

The female protagonist, who had been catching her breath for a moment, lowering her head and letting tears fall from her eyes without stopping, reached out to the knife next to her.

"···I never thought that my end, as a renowned assassin, would be like this. This sword is the very sword I plunged into your body."

The heroine, who had her eyes tightly shut so tightly that her eyelids were trembling, took the sword out of its sheath and aimed it at her heart.

"Your Majesty, how much pain must have been in these past few days... I can't forget the look in your eyes as you looked at me. How could I forget? I guess I'm a helpless coward. I'm afraid of even the pain, so I'm going to kill myself with a single stroke. Will you forgive me for this...?"

As soon as she finished her last words, she plunged the knife deep into her heart. A few minutes later, even the last vestiges of life that had remained in the house were gone.

And so, my life, which had started out bright and dazzling but was shrouded in darkness, ended.
