“It’s fallen.”
Hearing those words, my hands, which were administering first aid, stopped for a moment. Well, it was my fault for trusting her, even though I knew full well she'd be overwhelmed if we were alone, let alone together. She must have known she'd get hurt. I could understand her heart, for caring for the patient was more important than herself, but I couldn't help but feel tears welling up in my eyes. The professor rushed into the operating room and shouted, bringing me back to my senses.
“Professor, Serin… Serin…”
Seeing me struggle to continue speaking, the professor motioned for me to take a deep breath. I followed suit, and it seemed to calm me down a bit. The professor then turned to Jehee and spoke to me.
“I’ll take care of this, so you go see Jin Se-rin.”
"but…"
“Come on, this patient is just in shock for a moment, so don’t worry and go see Jin Se-rin.”
“Maybe he’s more serious now, because I saw the culprit running away covered in blood.”
As soon as I heard that, I ran to the hospital room. The room I was in was truly horrific. Serin was lying on the floor, Jimin was pressing on the bleeding spot as if trying to stop it. I immediately called the other doctors for help.
Serin was transferred to another operating room. It seemed the killer had stabbed her. They may have intended to use a jackknife to stab Jehee if strangling her didn't work, but the wound was quite deep. Since it hadn't penetrated the heart, they deemed it beyond the scope of thoracic surgery, so they transferred her to another department.
What I hadn't worried about before, thanks to the professor's words, had become such a huge problem that I was once again thrown into a panic, unable to do anything. The pungent smell of blood in the hospital room assaulted my nostrils. The image of Serin lingered in my mind. I'd certainly seen blood often during my internships and while preparing to become a doctor. But today, it felt strangely out of place.
I knew I couldn't just give up and retreat. I quickly changed into scrubs, prepared myself, and went into the operating room where the professor was, assisting with Jehee's surgery. My presence made the procedure much easier, and thankfully, Jehee was fine.
But the problem was Serin. Perhaps because the knife had penetrated so deeply, the bleeding wasn't being properly controlled, and it seemed to have touched a rather important spot. How could someone so mercilessly stab a doctor? Leaving Serin's surgery to the other doctors, the professor and I headed to the police station.
