Words, death

It was summer
Episode 1. A Special Day
—
“Hey, Kim Yeo-ju!”
My name is Kim Yeo-ju, I'm 18 years old. I'm a woman in the prime of my life.
“Why, what’s going on?”
“No, can’t you just come see a friend?”
“Oh, you can’t come.”
"No, that's ridiculous. Then should I go back? Oh, I had something to say~ I guess I'll just leave it at that and go~"
“No, I have something to say. Why are you leaving? Come back!”
And, that annoying guy who just ran in from far away, but is much taller, more handsome, and prettier than me… Let’s stop talking, it’s sad. Anyway, this guy is Park Jimin. He’s the same age as me, and unfortunately, our parents have been close since before I was born, so we’re childhood friends.
Park Jimin approached me and smiled brightly and playfully.

“What are you laughing at?”
“No, it’s just that it’s so much fun~”
Seriously, I'm laughing so openly in front of people. Isn't that just teasing people?
“…Are you kidding me right now?”
“No, that’s not it~”
After saying that, Park Jimin started walking a little ahead of me and spoke without showing his expression, without looking at me, and without turning around.
“Hey, Kim Yeo-ju. Do you know what day it is today?”
I wondered why he was suddenly talking about dates, but I answered the question he asked.
“Oh, I know very well. July 6th.”
“Then you don’t even know what day it is today?”
“No? Your birthday is October 13th, and mine is October 28th. What else is there?”
“Ugh, you don’t know anything? Really? This guy knows everything~”
“Oh, you’re talking like your brother again. So what day is it today?”
“I’ll let you know later. What time will you be home after school?”
“It ends at 9:30. I’ll be out around 9:35 or 9:40.”
“Isn’t that where the academy was last time? Next to that alley that branches off into several directions?”
“Uh. Can you come pick me up?”
"Of course I should go. Why don't you go? How dangerous is it to be in that place at that time?"
A day no different from usual, truly ordinary and therefore good. For some reason, this feeling was especially good when I was with Park Jimin. Maybe it was because he was one of the few people I had seen up close for the longest time.
“Okay, do you know what kind of kid I am?”
And, since he was my oldest friend, I could talk and answer comfortably. As I was thinking that, Park Jimin looked back.
"Anyway, I'll be there right then, so until then, think carefully about what day it is. I'm going to school!"
“Oh. Okay, that’s what it is.”
After seeing Park Jimin off as he ran off into the distance, I headed to the academy with the thought, "What's the big deal anyway?" Without a single worry about what day it would be.
