3. Yunki's Story

All high school seniors are preparing for the CSAT? F*ck that lol. You need money to study. Kids who get private tutoring, go to academies, and take lessons. It's all about money, so I don't understand why they get all this praise and respect as if they're talented. It's all fake.

Ah, I'm Min Yoongi. I'm 19 years old, a senior in high school. I was adopted when I was 10 and have been living with the same family ever since. (Honestly, I don't even want to call them family.) I wonder why my adoptive mother adopted me if she only loves her own son. Adoptive father? Don't even mention it. I've been beaten so much that these days, even minor blows don't hurt.

“Hey, where are you going at this hour?”

“It’s a convenience store.”

“Don’t be late. It’s time for the old man to come back, so you should come out to meet him.”

They don't even say "Mom" or "Dad" with their own mouths. They just call each other "Auntie" and "Auntie." They probably don't want to be my parents. If that's true, why did they adopt me? It would have been better to just give them a grant and let them grow up independent.

“Why do I have to come out to meet ‘Mister,’ who isn’t even my biological father? I don’t understand, ma’am.”

“What…? What did you just say!?”

“You should let your precious son, whom you love so much, do whatever he wants.”

It's so frustrating. It's always like that. Even though he knows full well that I hate it when he picks me up, he still stops me every time. (He says he feels sick when I'm in front of him or something.) It's not like I'm some kind of housekeeper or anything.

“It’s 1500 won.”

I left, tossing three 500-won coins on the counter, making a jingle sound. Damn, it's fucking cold. I was just about to open the can of warm coffee I'd just bought and drink it.

“Phuechwi…!”

A girl was crouching on a bench, sobbing. She was wearing nothing but a hoodie and shorts. I wondered if she was crazy in this weather, but I felt a strange sense of kinship and approached her.

“Drink.”

“Huh…? Oh, it’s okay…”

“If you give it to me, I’ll just take it? My arms will fall off.”

“Ah… thank you.”

The child sipped his canned coffee, frowning as if surprised by the bitter taste, yet still chugging it down. Why? Looking at him, I was reminded of my imaginary younger sister, who doesn't even exist. As an only child, I wished I had a younger sister like her.

“Ah… I’m sorry. You couldn’t even drink the drink you bought because of me…”

“Okay, what’s so good about caffeine anyway?”

"ah…"

Gravatar
“Ah, no…! It’s not like I fed you anything bad, what I’m saying is, you can just eat less of the bad stuff, so no… Hah… Fuck.”

“Phew… Yes, I understand everything lol”

Ah. This is how it feels. Having someone smile and clap their hands in agreement... It's so strange. It makes me, someone so insignificant, feel like I've become something special. Is it okay to be this happy just because someone I've never met before smiled at me?

“Hey, Min Yoongi! Did you think that if you ran away like that, it would be over?”

“Why, why here…?”

“Hello, old man… Oh my! There’s nothing I can’t say in front of a pretty girl.”

This is ridiculous. That person's symbolism is so obvious. Even if it's just me, he seems to want to maintain his image. Suddenly, he pops out from around a corner and acts all nice and friendly. It's disgusting, it's tiresome.

“Heh… I was worried, Yoongi. You said you were going to the convenience store and didn’t come back…”

Worried... how funny. The woman who said she was worried about me held my hand, but her grip was weak. In other words, she didn't so much hold my hand as put her hand on it. I shook her hand away. And then, unconsciously, I took a step toward her.

“Yoongi… why are you like that…?”

“Ma’am, this kid is really going to misunderstand lol”

“What, what are you talking about, Yoongi…”

"If anyone saw you, they'd think you were my real mother. Since when did you start worrying about me? It's creepy."
