The neon pink and teal lights of Retro Glide Roller Rink spun smoothly over the polished wooden floor, casting a dizzying, vivid glow across the crowded arena. From the speakers overhead, synth basslines and lively synth chords rang out grandly, filling the indoor space with the high-energy vibe of '80s pop rock.

I was standing against a low wall painted in neon colors, desperately gripping the safety bar as I somehow tried to keep my balance on the rental skates. Just a few steps away, Chan-yeon was gliding backward with infuriatingly smooth, precise skill. With his signature calm and superb athletic reflexes, he looked utterly serene, his arms loosely folded across his chest. In a plain white T-shirt with a slightly oversized denim jacket thrown over it, he kept that cool, mature air of his while still looking exactly like a perfect retro high school heartthrob (the kind who manipulates your first love).

"You look exactly like a newborn fawn," Chan-yeon teased with a low, charming laugh. He spun around once to face me, then came to a light stop right in front of the wall I was clinging to, without using any brake at all.

"I'm literally hanging on for dear life here, Chan-yeon. Don't make fun of me." I snapped back, huffing. The strain on my body and the dazzling, shattering smile right in front of me made my face burn hot.

"I'm not teasing you," he murmured softly, his gaze relaxing with that deep, gentle aura of his. He lifted his large hands toward me. Palms up, it was a silent gesture offering a lifeline. "Come here. Just trust me and take my hand."

"I can't promise that," I laughed, reluctantly letting go of the wall bar and placing my small hands over his broad palm.

The instant our fingers locked tightly together, it felt as if a huge current shot straight up my arms, and my composure began to tremble violently. Chan-yeon's usually steady posture wavered for a split second. His calm, unshakable poker face cracked completely in an instant, and his eyes widened just slightly. A rare, cute crimson flush bloomed across the back of his neck. As if to prove that my touch had completely shattered his focus.

Before either of us could look away from that intense stare, the small unidentified fragment on the floor under my left skate wheel slipped beneath it. The moment I drew in a sharp breath, my legs slid outward and I pitched forward. And Chan-yeon, who was always calm and composed, got taken down with me in an instant, crashing together with me onto the wooden floor.

The wooden floor rushed up into view in my line of sight, tangled with neon colors and spinning lights. I braced for a hard impact, but instead of the wooden planks, what I hit was Chan-yeon's chest. He moved with almost soldier-like reflexes. His big arms immediately wrapped around me, shielding my head and back from the floor, and the two of us rolled roughly across the floor for a few steps before finally coming to a stop.

We lay there completely tangled together on the floor for a while. The synth bass from the speakers overhead kept vibrating through the wooden floor beneath us, humming straight into our bodies.

"Ow..." I muttered softly as I opened my eyes. Then I froze completely. Chan-yeon was lying flat on his back, but he was holding me safely and tightly against him. His face was less than three inches from mine, and his deep, dark eyes were wide with intense, breathless shock. That dependable, older-brother-like mask he always wore was completely gone. I could feel his heart pounding wildly against my chest where our bodies were pressed together, and his cheeks were flushed a bright, adorable crimson.

In that instant, every sound in the crowded roller rink vanished as if by magic. We could only stare at each other. In the warm air, our breaths tangled together, and my heart sank with the weight of a sudden, heavy wave of romantic tension.

Breaking the magical silence, Chan-yeon let out a small, slightly awkward laugh, smiling with eyes curved as if he were trying to hide just how flustered he really was.

"Hmm," he said with a soft cough of a laugh, easing his hands away from my waist. His voice was a little lower than usual. "That definitely wasn't part of the plan."

"I did warn you I couldn't promise anything," I shot back playfully, laughing nervously through my lips as I felt heat rush up my face.

With careful, deliberate movements, Chan-yeon shifted his weight and effortlessly found his balance on the skates despite the awkward angle. After he got up first, he reached down and, with an unbelievably gentle touch, slipped his firm hands under my armpits to lift me up easily. Keeping a solid grip around my waist so I wouldn't end up falling again, he slowly guided me backward until my hands could safely hold onto the roller rink exit door.

Once my feet landed securely on the hard carpeted floor, he let go, but his gaze lingered on my face with a warmth that was gentle and affectionate. He scratched the back of his neck, and a cute, shy smile bloomed across his face.

"You know," Chan-yeon murmured softly, pointing at the cluster of sparkling lights across the main lobby. "I think those skates have absolutely decided they want to catch us tonight... Want to go do something else instead?"

We returned the murderous rental skates and changed back into our own shoes, then walked to a tucked-away corner far off in the lobby. In the darkness there, a vintage sticker photo booth with neon decorations hummed as it ran. The curtain was a faded velvet red, and the glowing sign above it blinked with a warm, alluring light.

"We need proof that we survived," Chan-yeon said, the playful grin back on his face. He pulled the curtain back and gestured for me to go into the cramped wooden seat inside.

I squeezed myself into the narrow space, and Chan-yeon slipped in right beside me. The photo booth was unbelievably tight. His broad shoulder pressed firmly against mine, and the clean, cozy scent of his cologne instantly filled the tiny interior, making the air feel suddenly warm. Under the narrow shelf, our knees bumped with a soft thud, and my heart began racing all over again.

"Okay, the flash is going to go off four times," Chan-yeon murmured softly, a finger resting on the glowing start button on the screen. "Ready?"

For the first photo, we pressed our shoulders close and put on ordinary, textbook smiles.

In the second photo, Chan-yeon dramatically pointed at my bruised knee, and I pouted at the lens like a tragic heroine. Right when he burst out laughing in a low, rumbling way, the camera caught it.

By the time the third frame went off, our light laughter had begun to fade. The cramped space felt even smaller, and much more intimate. When I turned my head to look at him, Chan-yeon was already staring straight at me. His gaze was deep, unwavering, and filled with a gentle but undeniable intensity that completely took my breath away.

Click. The fourth and final flash of the camera burst white for an instant, lighting up the booth, but neither of us blinked. Even as the photo booth machine started printing our strip outside with mechanical whirs, we stood frozen, staring into each other's eyes.

The silence inside the curtained booth settled heavier and heavier, wrapped in a wave of breathless, sweet romantic tension. Chan-yeon's hand, resting on the shelf, slowly slid along the wooden surface until his fingertips gently touched mine. He didn't pull away. Instead, he turned his hand over and laced his long fingers through mine, holding our hands tightly together with a warm, firm grip.

"By the way," Chan-yeon whispered. His voice dropped low enough to steal my breath, and a shiver ran down my spine at the sound. He leaned in just a little closer, looking at my face with those dark eyes, completely serious. "I do try to act calm and mature on the outside... but honestly, you make a complete mess of my head. Since you got on that link tonight, every time you touch me, it feels like my heart's going to jump right out of my chest."

In the booth's dim light, a vivid, lovely crimson flush spread across his cheeks, completely washing away his usual composure.

"I don't want to be just your reliable friend anymore," Chan-yeon murmured. A soft, impossibly sweet smile brushed his lips as he squeezed my hand tight. "I want to be the person who holds your hand like this every day. Promise me you feel this too."

Chan-yeon's confession lingered in the warm, stifling air of the booth, and the weight of his honesty made my heart pound hard against my ribs. I looked down at our intertwined fingers, then back up at his big, anxious eyes. The defensive, cool exterior he usually wore was completely gone, and he stood before me utterly unguarded and vulnerable.

"Chan-yeon," I whispered. My voice trembled as pure happiness suddenly washed over me. "You don't need to make any promise. My heart's been doing the same thing ever since the moment I fell on top of you."

A breathless, unbelievably relieved laugh spilled from his lips, and a bright, happy light sparkled in his eyes. Before I could fully read his expression, Chan-yeon leaned forward and closed the last few inches between us.

When his lips met mine, it was the first kiss—fluttery and butterfly-light. It was soft and sweet, filled with all the warmth and affection he'd kept hidden for months. I squeezed his hand tight and closed my eyes, completely lost in the quiet magic hidden behind the velvet red curtain.

The moment our lips touched, the photo booth machine burst out with a violent, noisy mechanical cough. A sharp robotic beep echoed through the narrow space, and with a loud clunk from the slot below, the freshly printed photo strip popped out.
The magical mood shattered in an instant. The two of us jerked apart in surprise, our lips separating as we blinked at each other with utterly stunned expressions.

Chan-yeon looked at the blinking screen, then back at me, and his cheeks flushed at once into a fierce, dazzling crimson from the sudden interruption. He rubbed the back of his neck with one hand and let out an embarrassed but adorable laugh.

"Ugh," Chan-yeon chuckled, bending down to lift the red curtain while he muttered in an embarrassed, playful voice. "This machine has the worst timing."

I burst out laughing, and the remaining romantic tension melted completely into pure, lighthearted joy. "I guess it just wanted us to have proof."

We slid up from the cramped wooden bench and walked back out into the neon-lit lobby, still holding hands tightly. Chan-yeon leaned down and took the shiny photo strip from the metal slot. Under the neon lights, we held it between us and looked at the four clear shots.

The first two were full of goofy smiles, and the third photo perfectly captured that breathless moment when Chan-yeon was staring straight into my eyes. But it was the fourth picture that made both of us smile. It caught the instant after his confession, when the camera flash went off and his face was painted with a deep, beautiful blush, along with the pure, overwhelming happiness in our eyes.

"I'm taking this one," Chan-yeon murmured, gently stroking the glossy edge of the paper with his thumb before safely slipping it into his jacket pocket. He turned to look at me and pulled me close to his side, squeezing my hand with an unbelievably soft gaze. "Come on. Let's go get something to eat. We've still got plenty of lost time to make up for."

As we left the rink and breathed in the cool, clear night air, I rested my head on his sturdy shoulder. My chest was full of happiness. We had survived those horrible rental skates, broken through the wall of the comfortable friend zone, and finally set the perfect beginning for our happily ever after under the neon lights.
