A week had passed since Sujin's dream. Sujin, now in her saintly state, hadn't seen her mother for the last time. As a saint, she had many duties to fulfill. Like a baby bear who had lost its mother in the cold winter, a corner of her heart felt empty, naked. The clothing store she had guarded with such fervent gnashing of teeth and struggling, and the dilapidated house that seemed on the verge of collapse, had a single crape myrtle blooming on its roof, as if watching over Sujin from afar.
While Sujin was in the world of the saints, Yeonjun, who was conducting a divine trial on her mother's life, suddenly recognized a resemblance to her. Glancing at her, covered in scars from all the chores she'd done, Yeonjun proceeded with the trial more earnestly than ever, standing beside the god.
"How has your life been?"
"It was nice to meet our pretty daughter."
"How was your day?"
"I was happy to see our Sujin all day."
Even as Yeonjun continued to question her, she smiled happily, thinking only of Soojin. Yeonjun, watching closely, handed her a piece of divine food from his arms. Yeonjun's choice was her reincarnation. Her sincerity, having lived her life with only her daughter in mind, had reached even the gods.
"I won't eat it."
Even when Yeonjun refused the food he offered her, she didn't lose her smile. Even when he told her it was food that would grant her reincarnation, she shook her head and said it was fine. Then, Yeonjun suddenly wanted to hear her refusal, so he pulled away and looked at her. Then, words that would move even a god gushed out of her mouth.
"What good is reincarnation? Our Sujin, who lost her only mother as a saint, now lives with a single zinnia flower deep in her heart. If I were to return, wouldn't that zinnia flower wither? I am happy enough just to exist as a single zinnia flower in Sujin's heart. I want to protect Sujin in this vast sky."
Both Yeonjun and Shin were equally surprised by her words. Sujin's mother was probably the first human to refuse reincarnation, lest she see the zinnia in her young daughter's heart wither. Yeonjun, still smiling kindly and nodding, finally guided her to heaven. Finally, when asked if she didn't need to see Sujin's face, she shook her head, saying that the image she'd seen in her lifetime was beautiful enough.
Yeonjun, whose heart suddenly ached, placed a white lantern in her hand and smiled as they stood together on the bridge, where clouds stretched across the sky. Taehyun belatedly approached Yeonjun, who had been sending Soojin's mother off, saying that endless happiness awaited at the end of this road. After she left, Taehyun, who had been silently embracing and comforting Yeonjun, who had been holding back tears, finally spoke.
"Michael, don't be too sad. Don't forget that this is the mission of angels."
Even though he walked this path of divine judgment thousands of times a day, Yeonjun had probably never felt such heartache as he did today. Despite his mental fortitude, guiding humans to the bridge, Yeonjun's heart, which had never healed, was now broken and torn to pieces. Angels were more painful than one might imagine. He watched the deaths of others, calmly holding divine judgment, but deep down, his heart must have been torn and broken countless times.
Even God, who knew that very well, was unable to strengthen Yeonjun's mentality any further, and Yeonjun endured each day with difficulty while undergoing mental tests, as God told him to love himself just as he was.
