We decided not to cross the line (Season 2)

Episode 70. Tarot

We were on our way home

with “saju, tarot” written on it

and went into a tiny shop.

We decided to get a tarot reading,

starting with Hunji.

The lady stared at the card Hunji had drawn

for a long time.

"Hmm...."

Tilting her head, the lady looked at the card

once more.

"What do you do for work, young man?"

"I’m an aspiring actor."

I answered for him.

"Really? Strange."

The lady looked down at the card Hunji had drawn

again.

"This is supposed to be a time when you’re already shining..."

Then she tilted her head again.

"It says you’re popular now,

and at a certain stage where you’ve already made some progress,

but you’re still an aspiring actor?"

"Really? Will I succeed as an actor?"

I asked in Hunji’s place.

"Yes. You’ll succeed and be very popular...

that’s what it says."

"And you’ll become much bigger than you are now."

I looked at Hunji and said it, winking.

"Looks like things are going to start going your way now."

"Then please tell us about our compatibility.

Can you read compatibility with tarot, too?"

We followed the lady’s instructions

and drew cards, waiting anxiously.

"Young lady..."

The lady studied the cards for a long time.

"You’re also someone who wants to shine on your own...

if you meet this young man..."

The lady looked at Hunji.

"you’ll become someone who helps this young man shine

as much as he can."

I was briefly flustered by the unexpected answer.

After a moment’s pause, the lady said to me,

"For this young man, you’re a haven."

The lady told me to draw a few more cards.

Then she looked at the cards for a long time.

"Right before you met this young man,

there was someone you met, wasn’t there?"

"...Yes."

"That person is someone who will make you shine.

If you marry them, they’ll even make people call you Madam."

Without taking her eyes off the cards,

the lady went on.

"You’ll feel more at ease,

and the other person will go along with everything you want..."

Hunji and I looked at each other at the same time.

"Then what about our compatibility?"

The lady just kept looking at the cards for a long time, then

her expression hardened for a moment.

"Why? Is something bad?"

I asked first, curious.

"You do like each other a lot..."

The lady paused before speaking.

"but if you stay together, fate will change."

"What do you mean, fate will change?"

"There’s a path you were originally meant to take,

but the other person will lead that path somewhere else."

The lady stopped speaking for a moment.

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

"It’s good for one of you, and bad for the other."

"....For whom is it bad?"

I asked again.

The lady didn’t answer.

She just turned over one card

and looked back and forth between me and Hunji.

"You’ll find out as time goes by.

By then, you won’t choose each other.

Come back."

Hunji asked carefully,

"Will we get married?"

"If one of you makes up your mind and pulls the other along,

it’s possible."

After a brief pause, the lady

looked back and forth between us.

"But..."

"But what?"

"But... these two have a more important problem

than marriage."

"What is it?"

The lady looked at me

instead of Hunji.

"Whether young lady can follow this man."

"... Me?"

The lady nodded slowly.

"If you want to follow him, there will be things

you’ll have to give up."

After a brief pause,

the lady added,

"A lot..."

We’d come expecting good news,

so it was a little disappointing.

Without getting the satisfying answer we hoped for,

Hunji left the shop first.

I was about to follow after Hunji,

when the lady called me in a quiet voice.

"Young lady. Come back alone tomorrow."

I stopped in my tracks.

Unable to answer because of an unease I couldn’t explain,

I just said goodbye and left the shop.

"Do you really have to meet that person like that?"
