The prosecution has demanded a prison sentence for singer Song Min-ho, who was brought to trial on charges of unauthorized absence for over 100 days while serving his mandatory military service as a social service worker.

On the 21st, Judge Seong Jun-gyu of the 10th Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court held the first hearing of the first trial for Mr. Song on charges of violating the Military Service Act and proceeded with the closing arguments to conclude the proceedings. Typically, if there is no dispute between the prosecution and the defendant regarding the facts or evidence, the court concludes the proceedings at the first trial.

According to the prosecution's indictment, Mr. Song is accused of performing his duties negligently, including being absent without permission for a total of 102 days while working as a social service worker at the Seoul Mapo-gu Facilities Management Corporation and other locations from March 2023 to December 2024. The current Military Service Act stipulates that if a social service worker deserts from service for eight days or more without justifiable reason, they shall be sentenced to imprisonment for up to three years.

The prosecution requested that Song be sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison, stating, “It appears that (Song) did not actually work while being absent without permission for a long period, and it appears that he falsely explained his attendance to the supervisory agency.”

Mr. Song’s side admitted to all charges raised by the prosecution on this day. Mr. Song’s lawyer stated, “(Mr. Song) is deeply remorseful for failing to properly fulfill his military service obligations as a young man of the Republic of Korea,” adding, “He made a wrong judgment while forgetting the strict standards expected of a public figure.” The lawyer further appealed to the court for leniency, noting, “At the time of the crime, the defendant was suffering from physical and mental distress severe enough to make it difficult to perform normal duties due to a history of extreme mental illness.”

In his final statement, Mr. Song also said, “As someone loved by many, I am truly sorry for failing to set a good example and showing a shameful side of myself,” adding, “I want to recover my health as soon as possible, and if given the opportunity to serve again, I want to faithfully complete my military service to the very end.”

Lee, the service manager responsible for Song, who was indicted and tried together with Song on this day, denied the charges, stating, "We were not involved in causing (Song) to desert from service." The court plans to hold Lee's next trial on the 21st and then set a sentencing date for Song.
