As night fell

1

Night deepened, the moon was hidden by dark clouds, and there were no twinkling stars in the night sky. The darkness was like black ink, spreading across the pure white canvas of the sky, turning it pitch black, making my silhouette, my face, and my heart clearly outlined on the windowpane.

Night fell. I stood by the window, gazing at the Han River in the distance. Then I thought of Wu Shixun, of the days when he read poetry to me, and of the little house we lived in together, the place with the blue eaves overlooking the Han River.

Indeed, the days of youth are worth cherishing.

"Minister, why haven't you left work yet?"

I finally snapped out of my daze and glanced at the clock on my desk. It was 10:30. I hadn't realized I'd been standing by the window for an hour, well past closing time. Seeing I was going to miss the last bus, I stopped worrying, just tidied up the files on my desk, grabbed my bag, and left. As I closed the door, I couldn't help but look out the window one last time. For some reason, tonight felt very special; both the night and him seemed unusual.

I left the company with Baekhyun. Just as we reached the building, the sky turned against us, and a light drizzle began to fall. Baekhyun had to hurriedly go back into the company to grab two more umbrellas.

I held the umbrella, raindrops cascading down its curves and splashing onto my legs. My expensive leather shoes, unlike my cheap fake ones from years ago, didn't mold and lose their shine when wet. They reminded me so much of myself years ago, desperately running in the rain after a breakup.

"Chief Bian, let's go get some liquor."

I don't know why, but I really want to drink. Maybe it's because of the rain.
