Brand of the Desert

Ink and paper

Hyunjin did not let go of my wrist. Instead, a long, heavy sigh slipped out between his lips, and his shoulders sank ever so slightly, as if from the weight of my question. He silently looked down at the clean white cotton bandage. For a moment, a broad, still silence stretched through the room, and before long his sharp, dark eyes lifted again and locked firmly with mine.

"So you heard the conversation outside." His voice echoed beneath the high wooden beams, completely calm. In the morning sunlight, he traced my expression one by one, making sure his lips were fully visible to me. "The emperor's decree is a forced political shield. The desert tribes are already scouring the border to find the escaped slave. If the central court discovers you hiding here without legal status, they'll execute you on the spot, and my military command will be stripped away whole for sheltering a fugitive."

He stopped speaking. His thumb slowly, calmly traced circles along one side of my wrist. His warm skin became a sturdy anchor, finally settling my racing pulse.

"This marriage is a strategic alliance. It's a fake rule meant to give you noble status and legally erase your past. I'll stamp it with the emperor's seal to satisfy the court, but in this inner chamber, with the door shut, you owe me nothing. For your safety, you'll have to stay within this estate, but that means you don't need to owe me any real obligation. Do you understand?"

I swallowed hard. The reality of his words settled heavily over the smooth wooden floor. I slowly nodded and let out a quiet, trembling sigh of relief. At last, it truly sank in that he had no intention of becoming a cruel master.

"I understand..." I murmured, my voice still rough and subdued from the desert dust.

Hyunjin's lips curved into a soft, secretive smile. Accepting my obedient demeanor, the intensity in his gaze completely softened. He let go of my arm and shifted on the edge of the mattress, reaching for the small, smooth porcelain jar on the low table beside the head of the bed.

"Since we're bound by a decree, at least we should know who we'll be sharing a roof with." he said. When he opened the lid, the clean, cool scent of crushed herbs rose up, and a faint, unfamiliar flush spread across his cheekbones. Keeping his voice low and steady, he introduced himself formally. "I'm Park Hyunjin. I'm the commander leading the border shield."

I looked down at the loose white cotton undergarments I was wearing. A sudden, heavy silence swallowed me.

"I don't have a name." Clutching the sheet tightly with my fingers, I whispered softly. Then I lifted my head again and met his eyes. "The tribe didn't give us names. We were just numbers."

Hyunjin froze. The hand holding the porcelain jar stopped in midair. His dark eyes widened ever so slightly, and as the reality of my past struck him, a wave of deep, fierce emotion full of protectiveness swept over his elegant features. He stared at me for a long, quiet moment, as if trying to etch the terrible marks of my injury-riddled body into his heart.

Without a word, he set the jar down and moved closer over the bed. His large frame shifted in until it completely filled my personal space. He reached out. His big hand moved with absolute, careful attention, gently unwrapping the end of the cotton bandage that had been wrapped around my left hand so he could check the flesh beneath.

He was so close it was hard to breathe. Trapped between his broad shoulders and the bed's headboard, I could feel the intense, steady heat pouring from his chest. His long, rough fingers were stained with ink in places from handling military scrolls, but his touch was unbelievably gentle. With the soft flesh of his fingertips, he spread cool, soothing ointment over my raw wound, making sure I wouldn't feel a single sting of pain. My heart hammered against my ribs. This time it wasn't from fear. It was from the weight of his complete focus on me alone.

He finished by rolling up the last strip of bandage and securing it in place. Then his palm settled over my small fingers, and he clasped my hand with a low, lingering, firm pressure that seemed to point it toward the bedding.

"Then under this roof, you don't need a past." Hyunjin whispered. His dark eyes were completely trapped in mine, and his warm breath brushed my face. His thumb traced a slow line over the back of my hand. His tone was full of an absolute promise that shut out the rest of the world. "When the time comes, I'll find you a name that suits you. For now... you're just mine to protect."
