Brand of the Desert

Shadow play

Over the clean white stone corridor of the inner palace, harsh, blinding midday sunlight poured through carved wooden lattice doors and washed over everything. The light cast long, geometric shadows across the smooth black-jade flooring. The air inside was deceptively calm, yet it carried only the faint, crisp scent of autumn wind and the heavy clatter of elite shield soldiers’ armor heard from far away. Every shadow within these fortress walls felt densely packed. It was because the court spies closing in from all sides, waiting for the empress to show even a single weakness, filled the place with predator-like, unblinking eyes.

I walked slowly along the raised wooden corridor. The unstructured layers of heavy imperial silk hanbok, unique to the palace and draping broadly over my slender frame, swallowed every movement I made. These thick folds were a thoroughly deliberate strategic choice. Beneath the deep crimson layers of hanbok, my body had changed perfectly over the past few months. Our hidden child, Yoonseo, had been growing in steady, quiet movements, thickening my waistline. The heavy imperial formal wear served as a flawless visual shield. Every time I stepped beyond the secret inner quarters, it buried and protected this sacred bloodline completely from the jealous gazes of the factions that raked fiercely over my silhouette.

I turned the corner and entered the imperial library, and the heavy ebony door slid shut behind my back, perfectly cutting off the prying eyes of the corridor.

Hyunjin was seated before a huge ebony table placed at the center of the sunlit library. Around him, the deceptive legal documents and tax ledgers sent by the court’s corrupt nobles formed vast, chaotic mountains of scrolls packed tightly on every side. The golden crown of the emperor who had gained the world rested on a low velvet box to the side, and his long dark hair, tied loosely back, fell as he dipped his brush into black ink. His sturdy shoulders, struggling to decipher the complicated phrasing of the capital’s nobles, were taut with tension, and his jaw was set in a hard line.

The moment I stepped into the sunlit space, his sharp, dark eyes locked onto my frame. In that one heartbeat, the fierce, commanding aura of a ruler vanished without a trace. Inside our own hidden refuge, the weariness on his face melted away at once, and soft, almost unbelievable warmth crept into smile lines over his refined, high cheekbones.

I walked right up beside him and leaned far across the table toward him, the layers of my robes making a soft rustling sound as they swept across the wooden floor. The physical distance between us was completely erased. As I reached out and slid the charcoal-drawn map across the treacherous tax scrolls, the strong, steady warmth pouring through his loose white undergarment washed straight into my side.

"The ministers of the northern faction are manipulating the grain ledgers to fund their private soldiers." I whispered smoothly, edging into the space right by his ear. I kept my movements deliberately careful and shaped my lips clearly so he could read every word I said in the bright library light. The quiet, low rasp left behind by years spent in desert dust spread through the still library like a beautiful, vivid contrast. "They’ll try to drain the valley treasury completely before winter harvest begins. You must flatly refuse their seals. And reroute the trade routes to the central garrison immediately. Break their leverage before they can rally their private troops."

A low, rich laugh slipped from between Hyunjin’s lips. I felt the vibration directly through his ribcage beneath my shoulder, and smile lines deepened at the corners of his eyes with a wave of fierce pride. He tossed the ink-stained brush onto the table, then rose smoothly to his feet, his massive frame casting a huge, protective shadow over me and erasing the last gap between us until he firmly hemmed me in against the edge of the sturdy table.

He reached out. His large, warm hand moved with intense, unyielding tenderness, wrapping safely around my waist. The moment he lazily rested his chin on my shoulder, his soft black hair brushed pleasantly against the nape of my neck, and his long fingers glided gently along the heavy silk of my hanbok to settle his palm calmly over the perfect, rounded curve of my belly. It was the touch of someone trying to hold our child securely within the deep closeness of his own chest.

"A genius strategist who brings down an entire corrupt faction before midday even arrives." Hyunjin murmured into my skin, leaving a soft lingering heat behind, and the deep, low timbre of his voice sent an immediate electric shiver straight to my toes. When he shifted the hand holding my waist, his long fingers trembled ever so slightly against the tiny, quiet movement of life beneath his palm. His usual sly, self-assured mask had completely broken and vanished, and a vivid blush, dusted pink, burst over his high cheekbones as he bent down with only a breath’s distance between us above the cloth covering the lower half of my face. "They probably think they’re only tracking an administrative error, Chae-won... never imagining for even one second that the future heir who will inherit this entire empire is growing under their noses, under the empress’s own perfect protection."

The quiet, heavy warmth of his large hand resting contentedly over the thick silk on my belly was violently shattered in an instant by the frantic, unknown sound of urgent footsteps pounding wildly from beyond the secret diplomatic corridor and echoing fiercely through the great hall.

Before we could even separate, the massive ebony library doors were flung wide open with a harsh, thunderous crack. One of our private eunuchs—his face completely drained of color and then flushed red, his breath ragged and panting in sheer terror—stumbled over the threshold and collapsed inward. He was one of the few trusted, fully inner-circle men in this palace who knew the dangerous truth of my pregnancy. He had omitted even the nobles’ traditional formalities and was now staring wildly, with eyes full of fear, at our closeness, perfectly pressed together in the brilliant sunlight.

"Your Majesty! Empress Mamma!" the attendant whispered in a hoarse, lowered voice, his tone trembling in pure terror as he hurriedly shoved the heavy wooden paneled doors behind him shut to block out the noise from the outer corridor. "The rival prince... he has completely broken through the garden gate of the inner palace! Using the sudden winter tax audit as his pretext, he’s marching straight down this very corridor with his entire faction’s advisory unit! He means to ambush the Empress the moment she’s left exposed—he’ll be here outside that door in just a few heartbeats!"

The air that had filled the library dropped in an instant into a freezing dread that stole the breath from everyone inside.

Hyunjin’s hand slowly slipped from my waist with obvious reluctance, his long fingers giving my side one last affectionate squeeze before letting go; in that single heartbeat, his entire physical bearing returned completely behind the fierce, terrifying aura of an emperor. The soft, embarrassed pink blush coloring his cheekbones vanished without a trace, and his dark eyes turned razor-sharp and ferocious with rage as he reached for the heavy golden crown resting on the velvet box at the side and fixed it firmly onto his long hair.

"Step back into the shadows behind the table, Chae-won." he said quietly. His low, deep voice was packed with the absolute, unshakable authority of an emperor who would not permit any objection or hesitation.

I did not delay even one second. I moved my slender body quickly and stepped back into the deep darkness cast by the huge ebony table, settling in so that the broad, layered folds of my deep crimson palace hanbok would completely crush and swallow every visible trace of my silhouette. I carefully smoothed down and fixed the thick panels of fabric, and once again the future of this empire was safely hidden beneath the perfect, impregnable visual shield of imperial pretense.

The moment I calmly folded my hands over my skirt and fixed my expression behind a cold, utterly unmoved mask, a huge, violent knock thundered through the courtyard from beyond the library’s heavy wooden doors, and the rival prince’s massive, dangerous shadow fell sharply across the lattice panels.

Hyunjin straightened his sturdy, gold-robed shoulders atop the massive imperial throne, his fingers once again carefully dipping the brush into black ink, and his deep voice sank with grand, cold resonance that immediately vibrated through the lattice panels and tore sharply through everything around it.

"Enter."
