3. Interview and Reunion

The day after finding out about the club,

I dug through the school bulletin board and found the band club my friend had shown me yesterday.

I went looking for the club room listed on the notice, and after a bit of wandering, I finally found it.

"Rooftop Room Band Club"

it said on a paper sign stuck there.

The paper looked like it hadn't been changed in a long time, old and torn at the corners.

I took one breath and knocked.

1 second... 2 seconds... 3..

With a click, the door opened....

"....Huh? You're that exchange student from before?"

The same person I'd first met at this school, the one who kindly showed me the way, was standing there.

"Ah, are you here to apply to the club?"

I was still dazed, so I couldn't speak and only nodded.

The senior smiled brightly and opened the door wider.

"Come in. Did you come thinking you'd do the interview right now?"

I slowly went into the club room.

It was packed with guitars, drums, microphones, keyboards (like pianos), and other instruments I didn't know the names of, plus speakers of various sizes, and there were two more people inside.

"Who is it?"(Club senior 1)

"Ah, they're the exchange student who I showed the way to a few days ago, and they say they want to join our club."

"Oh, really?"(Club senior 1)

Senior 1 turned and looked at me.

"Do you play an instrument? Or vocals?" (Senior 1)

"Uh... I play guitar.... electric...."

"Whoa, hey, nice. We're short on electric right now, so that's perfect." (Senior 1)

The senior who had shown me the way spoke up.

"First, shall we introduce ourselves? I'm Choi Yeonjun. I'm in charge of vocals.

"I'm 25, but I already served in the military, so I'm a third-year now."

Ah, so that senior was the vocal senior with the wide range.

"Hello. I'm Han Dael, enrolled as a second-year. I'm 21. I play electric guitar."

Senior Choi Yeonjun smiled and led me to a chair.

"Dael? That's an unusual name. Pretty. Sit here."

I sat in the chair and set down my guitar bag.

"Oh, you brought your guitar too? Can you play right away?

You can sing anything you want."

I nodded.

"Yes, I'll try."

I took the guitar out of the case and connected it to the speaker. I checked this and that while tuning it. As I looked everything over, Yeonjun senior asked,

"Do you have perfect pitch...? Since you're doing it without a tuner."

My face grew a little red.

"Ah... yes... I don't have perfect pitch... exactly, but I tune so often that I don't really need a tuner."

After finishing the tuning, I looked up.

"I think I can play now."

I slowly plucked the strings. Slowly, and then a little faster.

When the familiar notes came out, I felt at ease.

The song was "How dare you," a fan-made song from the animation Hazbin Hotel.

The arrogant, haughty angel Adam bursts out with emotion on the electric guitar.

When the song ended, I lifted my head from the guitar. The three seniors were staring at me blankly.

"I... is it bad...?"

As if snapping back to reality, Yeonjun senior shook his head and grinned brightly.

"No. I was just too shocked. You're seriously good. Did you come to college for guitar?"

I shook my head.

"N-no... I'm in the law department."

A whistle sounded.

"Law department? That's really unexpected. I love it. You're in. Obviously, you're in."

Yeonjun senior held out his hand.

"Nice to meet you, junior Dael."

I took his hand.

"Yes! Nice to meet you too!"
