The destination was a tavern the two of them sometimes went to.
At first, the mood heated up with talk about hobbies, but as they got tipsy, Fri started talking about romance.
About how kind and funny that person was, how they were their soulmate, how glad and happy they were to have met them.
"Fri, haven't you had too much to drink?"
Bambi naturally changed the subject.
"Doesn't Bambi have anyone? I want Bambi to be happy too."
At Fri's words, Bambi unconsciously clenched the fist they had on their knee.
The person I choose can't be anyone but Fri.
"I'm still fine with that sort of thing. Being with friends is more fun."
"I'm sure I'd get along fine with whoever Bambi chose.
So my family and Bambi's family could all go camping together, travel together, and……."
"So Fri thinks I'll be by their side for the rest of my life?"
With a smile cobbled together through desperate effort, when I said that, Fri looked puzzled and said,
"Huh? You're not going to stay friends with me for life?"
and answered.
Those two feelings alternated, rising and fading away: the happy feeling that they wanted to be with me, and the feeling that, in the end, we'd only be 'friends for life.'
I wonder what I even want to do.
"If fate allows it."
I could only give an awkward smile.
