—Thank you, Grandma. You look very pretty too. —The old woman opened her arms around the boy, and he happily embraced her.
"Come on, watch some TV while I greet the guests." Jimin nodded enthusiastically and ran to the sofa to sit down and then turned on the small television.
After two hours, the woman grew anxious when she didn't hear anyone knocking on the door. A deep sadness filled her; this couldn't happen to her grandson, he had always been a loving and cheerful child.
Jimin had realized. He didn't want to do it and ruin what was left of his day, but he had noticed that no one would arrive since he didn't hear footsteps approaching the door.
Even so, he wanted to wait a little longer. He was sure he had set the date and time correctly and that nothing had gone wrong. Perhaps some people had gotten stuck in traffic, or perhaps not. He didn't really know.
The clock struck six in the evening and Jimin stopped waiting. That small spark of hope had been extinguished.
She got up from the armchair, leaving the television on, and walked with a sad face towards the table where the cake and cookies were sitting.
And then she wept uncontrollably.
She cried because she couldn't celebrate her birthday the way she wanted.
He cried because his parents weren't with him.
She cried because of her awkwardness at socializing; she wished she at least had a friend with whom to share wonderful things.
His grandmother approached him and hugged him, trying to comfort him, but no comforting words could calm the child's pitiful cries.
It was good that no one had come, wasn't it? The cake and cookies would be just for him and no one else, but he knew very well that it was too much for him.
He had longed for this day to come quickly so he could dare to take a step forward, not backward.
Then he took a cookie that was lying on the plate and ate it angrily. He was angry with himself for getting his hopes up.
She picked up another cookie to eat in the same way as the previous one, but this time she had a sad look.
His grandmother watched the whole spectacle feeling ill; those cookies that her grandson repeated a million times saying comforted him on his bad days, this time it was the opposite.
