Axel’s POV
Seeing Ashton makes me feel anxious, I still remember that day when I broke up with her and how she begged me to stay. Ashton is my best friend and childhood sweetheart too, we grew up together and we are able to develop feelings that are beyond friendship. She always has this bright smile on her face, but now when she heard about Rainne, I can see how her bright smile turned into sadness. I know how hurt she is right now but I cannot do anything about that, I have Rainne now in my life and the least that I want to do is to hurt her. When Ashton asked me for a moment, I really didn't want to leave Rainne but when she gave me signal that it’s okay, I followed Ash outside.
“I waited for you, hoping that...that you just need time and space.” She started to cry.
I moved closer to where she is. “I’m sorry, Ash!”
“Sorry? What did I do wrong, L?” she held my hands and looked straight into my eyes.
“Nothing,, you did nothing wrong...It’s me and I’m sorry!”
“Then why do I feel like I did something wrong? L… we’ve been together for years, then you suddenly want to go here and then now, you have a new girlfriend?”
“I didn’t expect this to happen.. I don’t want to hurt you Ash, but I love Rainne.”
“So, you’re just going to throw our memories?”
“No… of course not.. It’s just that...what we had is all in the past and my present is Rainne.. I want her to be my future.”
She gave me a fake smile and then her tears started to fall. “She looks nice, I just hope that she will love you more than I love you.” She wipes her tears and starts to walk back inside the room. After a minute of thinking, I decided to go back to wherein I saw Ashton laughing with Rainne and my parents.. What is going on? I sat next to Rainne and held her hand.
“What are you talking to?” I asks
“Oh well.. Ash just shared your funny memories during senior year..” My dad says
“I was clever back then.. Anyway Mom, Rainnes’ parents invite us for a dinner party.. “
“Really?” My Mom asks
“Yah.. Our friends will be there too.. I want you to meet them.”
“Is that so? Well of course, we’ll be there. I want to meet Rainnes’ parents and your friends too..”
“You will love our friends, Mom. Especially Mads..she’s as fashionable as you..”
“Really? I really want to meet her..”
“Can I join too?” Ashton asks
I look at Rainne and she gives me a warm smile.
“Yes, of course..” She replies to Ashton.
I gave her a warm smile before looking at Mom.. “I think we better head out now.. I still need to change, Dad I’ll send you the address.”
“I can call a taxi..so that you can go to our house together.” Rainne suggested.
“No no.. It’s fine, Rainne. I know our son wants to spend time with you though.” Uncle Al says that’s obviously teasing Axel.
“And besides, I made a promise to your Mom.. We go first!” I and Rainne stood up and gave my parents warm hugs and kisses. When it’s now time for me to hug Ash, I feel a little awkward but then do it anyway.
“Thank you for lunch and it’s nice meeting you Aunt Biaca and Ashton.” Rainne says
“It’s lovely to meet you..” My Mom says and gives her a warm hug. “Take care you two.. Okay? Drive carefully, son.”
“Yes Mom.. See you later. Bye Dad, bye Ash.”
We have a silent ride to my place… but I never let go of Rainne’s hand. Once we are finally in my place, I prepare a tea for Rainne and she just sits on my bed while waiting for me. I know she has lots of questions and I am willing to answer all of it. When I go back to my room, I saw Rainne watching some movie from netflix, then I sit next to her and gave her the tea. She smiled at me and took a sip of the tea before putting it down on the table.
“I’ll just watch.. You can change now.” She says
I held her hand and caressed it..”Ask me anything you want to ask.. You’re my girlfriend and it’s my obligation to be honest with you..”
“I know..but I don’t want you to feel awkward..”
“It’s more awkward if I don't let you know about her..” She smiled at me and nodded.
“Then you can tell me who she is in your life…”
I nodded “She’s my ex girlfriend.. A childhood sweetheart and also my best friend…”
“Best friend?” She asks
“Yap.. She's been my best friend since we were in our junior year and then developed a feeling that is beyond friendship when we are in our Senior year.. She’s my first girlfriend..”
“I see.. She’s not just your ex but also your best friend and first love..”
“Heeeep…” I cupped her face and kiss her nose. “She maybe my first love but you will be the last.. “
“She’s beautiful and she looks smart too.. Why did you break up with her or did she break up with you?”
I felt nervous with her question.. How am I going to tell her the real reason why I broke up with Ashton.. I want to be honest with her but this one will surely break her heart.. I took a deep breath and smiled at her.
“Because I couldn’t promise her that I will still be the same man that she fell in love with when I decided to study here in Forks..Long distance relationship is a big bet and I don’t want to bet her happiness for that.”
“She’s important to you..”
“I love you, Rainne..She may be important to me, but that’s because she is my best friend..”
“But what if you need to go back to London.. Then it means it’s a long distance relationship too..So, you’ll break up with me?”
I smiled at her and pulled her into a hug..”Never..” I pull myself from our hug and rest my forehead into hers. “My goal is to change your last name into Mendez.” Then I wink at her, that makes her pout. “Are you willing to be my Mrs. Mendez?”
She slapped my arm and we both laughed.. “Yes.. but not now. Let’s be a doctor first.”
“One thing is for sure.. I will love you even if you don’t love me anymore..” Then I kiss her forehead.
She hugs me..”Then make me love you again, because I only want to love you.”
“I love you so much, Captain.” I face her and slowly move my face closer to her..I look in her eyes, asking for permission to kiss her and she smiles at me.. I close my eyes and kiss her on her lips..As I deepen the kiss, I can feel that she is responding to me with full of love..but before it gets us into something more passionate than this, I slowly pull my lips and give her a smack before kissing her forehead.. “ I love you..”
Her cheeks are burning red and she looks so cute with her blushed..”I love you too.”
I pat her head and smile at her..”I can’t still believe that finally you are now my girlfriend..”
“Believe it or not, I am your girlfriend now..and as your girlfriend, I want you to change now, because Mom will get mad at us if we’re late..”
I laughed..”Can we stay here for a moment? I still want to spend some alone time with you..” I lay down on the bed and put my head on her lap..”Let’s stay like this!”
She looks at her watch and smiles at me.. “We still have some time.. I will wake you up at 4, okay?” She says while combing my hair with her hand.
“Lay down with me..” I pout..
“Axel?” She slap my arm and it makes me laughed
“Lay down with me.. I just want to hug you..I’m a good boy my captain!” I offer her my little finger and she crosses her own little finger with it. I move to where the pillow is and wait for her to lay down with me.
We both lay down on the bed.. I offer my arm as her pillow and pull her closer to my chest. This feeling is the best feeling that I have experienced. I never imagined Rainne being with me right now and her being my girlfriend is a dream come true to me. I thought I was the one who’s tired but she easily drifted into sleep.. As I was looking at her face, I can see that she is happy. I will do my best to become a better person for her.. And I need to talk to Sophie as soon as possible, because once she hears things about this with other people, I am sure that she will make her move. That is the last thing that I want to happen.. I will do everything just to protect Rainne and that includes Sophie and my secret.
Hendersons’ Residence.. 6:00 PM
We arrived at Rainnes’ place at around 5 and the kitchen was very busy with the chefs that I think her parents paid to cook tonight.. We greet her parents,who are both in the garden.
“How’s your date lovebirds?” Uncle Jin asks.
“Dad..” Rainne sat on the side of his Dad and his Dad just laughed in Rainnes’ reaction..
“Where are your parents Axel?” I sit on the vacant seat in front of Uncle Jin.
“They will be here before 8, Uncle. Do you mind if my Mom and my best friend join us later too?”
“Your Mom is here?” Rainnes’ Mom seems shocked and that makes me wonder why. I look at Rainne and she has the same reaction as mine.
“Yah… She surprised me with my best friend.”
Her Mom drank the whole glass of water before standing up. “Excuse me.. I will just check the kitchen.” She smiles at us but she looks nervous.
“What’s wrong with Mom?” Rainne asks his Dad.
Her Dad smiles at her and caresses her hand.. “Maybe she didn’t expect to meet Axels’ Mom..Anyway don’t mind her.. She just wants to satisfy all our guests tonight..”
“But is it okay, Uncle?” I ask
“He smiled at me “Very much okay.. You are already part of this family..” I saw Rainne smile and she looks really happy that finally her parents are okay with me.
“Thank you, Uncle.”
“Do you want to play some board games? You know while we are waiting for the dinner to start..”
“Sure.. the pleasure is mine.”
“Let’s go to my study then..”
We go to his study room.. Rainne excuses herself to get us something to drink while playing.. At first I felt awkward being with Uncle Jin alone..but as we play, I get to know that he is a very nice person.. And maybe that’s the reason why Rainne is a Daddy’s girl..In our third game, we heard a knock from outside.
“Come in..” Uncle Jin said..
And to my surprise, it’s Gavin..
“Hello Uncle! Hey..” He greeted me too.”
I just smile at him..
“Oh Gav..come here we’re playing chess..Where is your Dad?”
Gavin sat next to Uncle Jin..”He’s down stairs, talking to Aunt Jhen..So, who already won?”
Uncle Jin laughs.. “ one one.. Axel is good.”
“Can I play too?”
“Sure.. I need to talk to your Dad anyway.. Do you mind Axel?”
“No.. Not at all, Uncle Jin.”
“Alright.. I’ll leave you gentlemen here, okay?” He stood up and went outside.
I feel like there’s a thin air inside the room because it’s just me and Gavin..He arranged the chess pieces.
“You’re now close to Uncle Jin?” He asks
“I think as Rainnes' boyfriend…..” I saw the shock in his eyes..”I need to be close to her parents, right?”
He smirks..”So, you and Rainne?” He laughs.. The kind of laugh that is very insulting.. “You think you are worth her?”
I looked straight into his eyes and smiled at him..”All I know is that, she is worth loving for..”
“Just make sure not to hurt her.. Cause if you do..”
I stood up..”I don’t need to make a promise to you, because I know what I am doing and I know that I love Rainne. Now if you’ll excuse me, I want to be with my girlfriend..” I walked past him and went outside.. Seeing Gavin here makes me feel angry, because I know that he loves Rainne too and I don’t know why he don’t want to admit it to her..While making my way down, I received a call from Mom, she said that they’re already here..I looked for Rainne and we look for my parents together with her Mom and Dad..
“Hi…” My Dad greeted me while handing the box of cake to Uncle Jin.
“Hello Mr. Mendez.. I see that you’re with your wife..Hi, I am Jin Henderson and this is my wife Jhen..” He offered his hand to my Dad and my Mom..but they both look nervous.
“Hi.. and Hi Jhen.. It’s been a while.” She gave Aunt Jhen a peck on her cheek.
“Yah.. It’s been a while..”
“You know each other?” My Dad asked..
My Mom nodded and smiled..”Yah.. My book launched in New York was held in their hotel..”
“I see..”
“Let’s go inside..The dinner is ready.” Uncle Jin suggested..
“By the way.. This is Ashton, Axels’ best friend..” Rainne, introduced Ash to her parents..
“Hi hija.. Feel at home..” Her Mom says, who’s already walking inside the house..
As we all reach the dining area.. Mr. Mowry and Gavin are already there and they greeted my parents.. Madi and Kaiden couldn’t join because of some family affairs too..We had an awkward dinner..
The exchanged looks of my Mom and Uncle Jin that seems like they knew each other well.. The look of Aunt Jhen to Mom..and of course the presence of Gavin too. Mowrys’ and Henderson are close that makes me feel a little conscious and jealous, because I know that Gavin is still part of Rainnes’ life.
After having dinner, we all headed to Gazebo. Where our parents have their tea, while I and Rainne just sit next to the pool area where they can still see us.
“Are you okay?” She ask me
“I think so.. I mean, I know you felt it too during dinner..”
“The awkward feeling? Yah.. There’s something about Mom and Aunt Bianca..”
“I’ll ask Mom later..Don’t think too much.” I pat her head and then someone sits next to me..It’s Gavin, then handed me a can of beer, while Ashton sits next to Rainne.
“So, how are you two?” Gavin asks.
“Don’t start, Gavin..Our parents are here.” I replied to him and moved next to Rainne.
“Okay.. okay..So, who is this beautiful girl who claimed to be your best friend? She looks familiar though.” Gavin smiles at Ash.
“Ashton..” ashton offered her hand and Gavin accepted it.
“Cross her out in your list..”
“Wow.. chill..I don’t want your best friend to get some wrong idea about me... “
“Okay.. That’s enough! Change topic.” Rainne suggested.
“Sure.. Do you really move on from me?” Gavin asks Rainne while looking at her eyes..
Rainne seems shocked with the question but gets back to her senses when I’m about to grab Gavins’ shirt..She held my arm and looked at Gavin..
“There’s nothing to move on about us..and that I’m sure of.” She smiled at me “Let’s go..get some fresh air in the garden.” She asks me while standing up and I help her.. “Let’s go Ashton?”
Ashton smiled at her..”No it’s fine.. I still want to feel the water here..”
“Are you sure?” I ask her..
“”Yap.. Go ahead, see you two at the gazebo later.”
“Okay..” We walk to the garden and leave Aston and Axel in the pool area..
“I’m sorry about that..” She’s walking in front of me..and I am just at her back.. “I know it’s uncomfortable for you to be with Gavin.”
“I will lie if I say No..because it really makes me feel jealous seeing him here.”
She stopped from walking but did not look at me.. “I may not love him anymore the way I used to love him, but our friendship still matters to me..”
“I know.. And I am not going to ask you to cut ties with him because I know that he is important to you.” I move closer to her and hug her from behind.. I rest my chin on her shoulder..”I just want you to know that I love you..”
“What I said a while ago is true.. I didn’t move on, because there’s nothing to move on about us.. I choose to stay with you because I love you not because I already moved on from him..I love you that I want to make you happy..and I feel so sorry because I realized it late, that everyone thinks that I only used you to get over him.”
“Don’t feel sorry.. I waited not because of the situation that you have with him, I waited because I love you..”
This is just the start of us.. And the only thing I want is to make her happy.. I know Rainne loves me and I can feel it.
Gavin’s POV…
I don’t know why I asked that stupid questions..I know that Rainne is mad at me because of that.. They leave me with this girl named Ashton, who is just playing with the water in the pool while having her wine..She looks very familiar, but I don’t know where I saw her before.
“She’s you ex?” She asks me..
I clear my throat before answering..”My ex fiance’” She looks at me with full of shock.. “It’s in the past.. Our family is good friends so, here I am..”
“You still love her..”
“Oh c’mon.. Love? What’s that?” I lied, because the truth is.. I still love her..
She laughs.. “You’re a pretentious one..It’s obvious that you hate L because he’s the one who’s with Rainne right now and not you..”
“L? Axel? How sweet.. Who are you Ashton?” I asked sarcastically.. “I know you’re not just his best friend..”
“I am not, why? I am his ex girlfriend..”
I was shocked.. Knew it.. I saw her from somewhere and that’s when I am looking for some information about Axel, she’s the girl that is with him on every occasion of Mendez in London..but why is she here?
“If you have plans of hiring Rainne, I tell you Miss.. your gonna regret it..”
She laughs at me.. The kind of laugh that is full of pity and hate. “I and Axel have been together since our senior year.. We’ve been friends since childhood.. Then suddenly he wants to study here in the U.S and broke up with me without any valid reason, aside from he doesn't want me to get hurt..He said he doesn't want me to wait, but I still waited for him.. On the day of his graduation I decided to surprise him but insread I am the one who’s been surprised by the existence of Rainne in his life… Now tell me.. Am I not allowed to feel betrayed and feel hurt?” I can see her watery eyes.. She looks so hurt but there’s nothing I can do.. I don't know her at all.
“I kept on thinking why? Why did he choose to study here where in fact there are multiple schools in London.. And why did he choose here where his dream of becoming a famous football player is there in London? I asked myself multiple times why.. But I couldn’t get an answer..then here he is, madly in love with a girl who happened to have an ex fiance’?”
It’s the exact question Blake has the last time we went out together..Is there really a reason why? But I know that Axel is true with his feelings for Rainne..but then why do I feel bothered?
“Just be happy for them.. You see how Axel loves Rainne and same goes with her.. “
“Are you happy?” She asks me ..Am I happy? I smiled at her.
“Seeing the person who is precious to you happy, will surely make you happy even if it’s not because of you..
