PRETENDER

01. If we become that strong… will that day come?

Pli and I have been dating for about two years now. Before meeting me, Pli seemed happier than anyone else. Whoever they were with, they were always smiling, and it felt like the moment they met me, they’d changed. I saw more tears than laughter, and texts were nothing more than one of the weapons of attack rather than a means of communication. Even so, the reason we—no… the reason I keep this relationship going is because I don’t want to hurt her more by forcing myself to tell her to end it. Along with the guilt that she changed after meeting me, I didn’t want to hurt her heart any more than it already was. Even today, in the end, nothing changes.

Pli…
Even knowing, I didn’t want to open it.
And yet, if I don’t read it, she’ll be hurt, and I feel sorry.
In the end, I check the message again today. And it’s obvious…
Today again, I’ll worry alone, feel sorry alone, hesitate alone, and end up hurting her again.
No matter how much I search through the file called you, I can’t find the answer to what the other half of that smile you sometimes show means.
It’ll be the same. Tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and for much, much longer after that, we’ll keep maintaining a relationship that can’t be explained in words.
Not all the memories I made with you were bad. I promise that much
Love isn’t a bad thing. But if the person in love falls short, in the end even that love becomes a love with a hole in it.
The one question I most want to ask you right now is just one thing.

“Are you happy in this relationship?”

Only you will know the answer. So if you’ll keep playing along on that precarious line… if we become strong enough for that, then maybe we can finish our pretend completely…
