Chapter 1 School (01-02)

01. Auditorium

"Wow... This school is really big. Is this the auditorium?"

I transferred to 00 High School today. Having lived in the countryside, everything about moving to Seoul felt new to me. In my neighborhood, most things required going downtown to enjoy. But that didn't mean I wasted bus fare every time I went downtown. In fact, I felt it wasn't a good idea, so I often argued with my friends about where to go for fun. While I was exploring the school, my thoughts drifted, and before I knew it, I found myself in the auditorium. It was incredibly noisy, as if there were people inside.

"What's inside...?"

Squeak—I opened the door, which seemed a little old, and saw several students playing basketball. Wanting a closer look, I entered the auditorium. They looked incredibly happy. ...It's so disappointing. It's truly tragic to suddenly lose the things you love.

"Hey, who are you? I think it's my first time seeing you."
"Ah, transfer student... he's here. Kim Ki-beom."
"Oh~ Hi! I'm Lee Taemin. How old are you?"
"I'm a second year student..."
"Oh.. it was you, hyung? I'm sorry, hyung haha.."
"It's okay, just speak informally."
"Yeah yeah! Oh right, hyung. Doesn't that hyung over there look really cool? Whenever he catches the ball, almost all of it goes into the goal!"
"Yeah... I'm jealous, I'm jealous."

He's handsome. He's tall. He's good at sports. I'm jealous...

02. Kim Ki-beom, Accident

Kim Ki-beom. That's my name.

When I was still a young elementary school student, my parents tried to get me into sports simply because I was a bit taller than my peers. Back then, I loved sports, so I obediently followed their lead. At first, no matter how much I loved sports, pursuing a career meant the training load doubled or tripled, making it overwhelming and tempting to quit. But as I continued, I found it fun and enjoyable.

I'm so unlucky. All of a sudden... all of a sudden, I was unable to do anything. I was on my way home after a long training session, and sure enough... when I opened my eyes, I was lying in a hospital bed with my right arm and right leg wrapped in bandages. And it took me three or four years just to walk properly. I was going crazy.

"Ugh, ah... it's awkward, it's been so long. Walking like this."

Even after my leg healed, I still had to carry crutches. They were always a nuisance, and a hassle to carry.

Kim Ki-beom. That accident that happened to me when I was young was the worst thing in my life.
