The Citadel of Bingyeon (Ice Smoke)

Episode 15: Dawn

The harsh knife-like wind of the glacier wasteland howled savagely just outside the narrow crack in the rock, but the air inside our tiny sanctuary was filled with a stillness so quiet it felt suffocating. This rocky cave was so cramped it didn’t even have room to build a fire, so the four of us had to maintain a tight formation, limbs and thick travel cloaks tangled all over each other, to fend off the tundra’s cruel, creeping cold.

It took almost several more hours of observation before the heavy, stubborn mist left behind by the restorative medicinal bath had completely cleared from my body’s systems. As my consciousness slowly returned, the faint dizziness that had been circling through my head melted away as cleanly as spring snow, and in its place came a perfect, absolute sense of safety that wrapped completely around me.

Chanyeon oppa hadn’t let go of me for even 1 second.
He was sitting with his back fully against the rough cave wall, his long legs gently enclosing mine as if to imprison me. His large, warm hand held my waist firmly and stubbornly, close enough that it could never be separated, supporting the weight of my posture while also pressing my back firmly against his broad chest so he could share even 1 ounce more of his body heat. The white fabric of his tunic against my cheek was pleasantly soft, and his deep, steady breathing vibrated through the back of my ribs with a low hum. The faint silver winter light filtered through the rock crack and flashed across his delicate silver cochlear implant, while the expression on his face as he looked down at me was melting softly, filled only with tender, quiet affection toward me instead of the rough, decisive density of a guardian.

"You’re fully awake."

Chanyeon oppa murmured softly, lowering his head near my ear. The very moment his voice sank a full octave deeper and sweeter, warmth surged through my veins like a waterfall, sweetly soaking deep into my chest. His blinding, sun-bright smile once again filled his entire face. He leaned in even closer, and gently pressed a soft, lingering kiss against the skin near my temple, one that was so deep and precious it seemed to melt away without escape.

"How’s your head, Seoha?"

"Much better."

I whispered softly. At last, my voice came out clear and steady, without a trace of wavering.

"My strength and my magic balance are both perfectly stabilized again."

"That’s a huge relief."

Hyunjin let out a completely exhausted, urgent, delicate breath and spoke in a grumbling tone. He was almost wedged in beside Chanyeon oppa’s broad shoulder, sitting squeezed into the narrow space. His travel cloak was fastened tightly up to his chin, and the cave light flashed sharply across the hearing aid on his right ear and the cochlear implant on his left. The moment he looked down at me, his signature puppy-like cute smile slipped through the awful fatigue of having worried all night, but both cheeks were still drenched bright red with a shy, heavy blush. As he brushed down the leather cuff and quietly touched the back of his neck, the tips of his ears were already burning scarlet.

"You were unconscious and drifting for so long I seriously thought my shoulder was going to turn completely, totally into an ice block from the frozen frontier. Why do you look so comfortable all tangled up in Chanyeol hyung’s arms like that? That’s seriously completely unfair."

"Hyunjin hyung, if you’re jealous, you should’ve switched places with me."

Jiseok gave a soft chuckle and gently soothed the tense mood between Chanyeon and Hyunjin. His deep, warm voice was like a beautiful anchor keeping me steady inside this cramped secret space.

Jiseok sat straight in the space by my feet, using his long body to firmly block the wind so the harsh wasteland gusts outside couldn’t mercilessly tighten around my legs. The moment our eyes finally met, that signature proud, huge smile bloomed dazzlingly across his face. From beneath his thick winter coat, he quietly extended a hand and covered mine with a firm, unwavering grip, interlacing our fingers snugly without any force at all. To keep the peace of this quiet sanctuary from being disturbed even a little, Jiseok continued speaking in a very low voice, careful that not a sound would leak out. Even so, his palm was still incredibly hot as it grounded me, soothing my pulse, and his thumb slowly drew a reassuring little heart in the center of my palm. In the corners of his eyes as he gazed at me, a story of deep and absolute devotion shone vividly.

We stayed there a little longer, wrapped in that warm, secret embrace toward one another. The regular rhythm of Chanyeon oppa’s broad chest supporting my back, and the gentle comfort of Jiseok’s hand clasped over mine, balanced each other perfectly, and the fear of being a fugitive isolated in the middle of hostile enemy territory soon receded far into the background static.

At last, a surge of fresh, overflowing warmth began pounding up from the very bottom of my skin. Deep in my chest, the celestial void magic pulse fully regained its forward frequency and was precisely overridden. I looked up at the three men, and across my face was clearly carved the resolve of a brand-new queen, certain to cut down the rules of this new world in a single sweep.

"I’m ready."

I whispered softly. A decisive, confident smile spread brilliantly over my lips.

"Let’s find the sure path forward."

After Jiseok gave my finger bones one last firm, stubborn squeeze—lightly carrying his unwavering resolve to protect me—and then let go, perfect trust in me shone brilliantly in his eyes as a gentle warmth. While he finely adjusted his hearing aid to control the air frequencies at the foot of the mountain, Hyunjin also immediately formed up, quietly letting the thin, proud trace of his signature dark smoke trail around the leather cuff flow out as he finished preparing to cast his illusion magic.

Chanyeon oppa let a gentle smile spread over the corners of his lips. His thumb lightly stroked the line along the edge of my waist with the strength of one last encouraging embrace, and then he stood up first, steadily supporting my waist and helping me plant the weight of my body securely onto the soles of my boots. While Chanyeon oppa’s reassuring support remained at my waist, my balance was perfect.

"The final fragment is quietly waiting for us beyond that horizon."

Chanyeon oppa murmured softly, lowering his head near my ear. His voice sank a full octave deeper and sweeter, filling my chest with perfect courage.

With Chanyeon oppa anchoring my side like a true fixed point, Hyunjin completely erased our escape trail by bursting out a barrier that sealed it away, and Jiseok leading at the very front of our formation to precisely guide our route through the terrain, we carefully made it all the way out of the crack in the rock. Stepping boldly into the tundra blanketed in blinding white frost, the four of us were finally fully prepared to meticulously map out the great hunt toward the last piece that would complete the crown.
