The next morning, Subin woke to the faint dawn light seeping in from outside the window.
No matter how much he twisted and turned, the heavy door would not open from the inside.
The window too seemed to be bound by pure-blood magic; the moment he touched it, a cold force of recoil snapped his fingertips away. Th
at perfect isolation only made Subin more tormented—not by the thin sense of being cast aside by his family, but by the real, tangible fear that he was being imprisoned in a vampire mansion.
‘What on earth am I supposed to do here?
A livestock animal to have its blood sucked?’
Just as his thoughts kept spiraling, the lock came undone with a thud and the door opened.
It was Yeonjun who came in.
Instead of the ornate outfit from last night, Yeonjun had thrown on a dark navy robe carelessly, and he looked a little tired.
But the moment he spotted Subin, he lazily curled up the corners of his mouth and walked over. In his hands were a small glass bottle filled with red liquid and a neatly arranged meal tray.
“Did you sleep well?”
Yeonjun asked as he set the tray down on the nightstand beside the bed.
A steaming soup, freshly baked bread, and fresh fruit. For food given to a prisoner, it was absurdly luxurious.
“...What is this?”
“Humans need to eat to live.
I told the servant to pay special attention to it. Looking at your build, I figured you’d need to eat a lot.”
Yeonjun looked at Subin with pleased eyes, like an owner tending a pet.
Subin felt repulsed, as if he were being raised as livestock, but his stomach, having gone more than a day without food, answered honestly with a growl.
When Subin hesitated, Yeonjun put a spoon in his hand and sat down beside him.
“Eat. It’s not poisoned or anything.”
Subin swallowed and carefully tore off a piece of bread, putting it into his mouth.
Yeonjun watched quietly, resting his chin in his hand, as Subin hurriedly swallowed the food.
His gaze slowly settled on Subin’s pale neck, revealed between the open collar of his loose shirt, and on the Adam’s apple moving every time he swallowed.
“By the way... why does a pure-blood vampire care about human food?”
As Subin asked warily, still chewing, Yeonjun tilted his head slightly.
“I told you. It’d be a waste to throw away a ripe fruit.” “......” “Now that you’ve filled your stomach, isn’t it my turn?”
Yeonjun opened the cork stopper of the glass bottle in his hand.
Then the room was filled with a disgusting fishy stench. It smelled like animal blood.
Yeonjun poured the blood into a glass and took a light sip, but soon frowned and set the glass down.
“Still tastes awful.”
“What...”
“The blood of low-rank ones is thick and dull, and animal blood is just fishy. The blood of human hunters feels like it would numb my tongue with the smell of silver.”
Yeonjun sat down close on the bed.
Every time he moved, the cold scent of roses brushed against Subin’s nose. Yeonjun’s red eyes began to shimmer.
“But you smell sweet.”
“P-please don’t come closer...!”
Subin tried to retreat in panic, but in an instant Yeonjun seized both of his wrists with one hand and pinned them above his head.
Subin was tall, but before the overwhelming grip of a pure-blood, not a single finger could move freely.
“Ungh...!”
With his other hand, Yeonjun peeled open the collar of Subin’s thin shirt. His cold fingers slid down along the full shoulder and neckline that were revealed. Subin’s body stiffened hard, a shiver running through him.
Yeonjun lowered his head and pressed his lips to the area near Subin’s collarbone.
Every time Yeonjun’s chill breath touched his skin directly, the tips of Subin’s ears and his cheeks flushed a bright red, as if they might burst.
By everything he knew as a hunter, he should have shoved him away at once and cut his throat, but his body would not move, as if paralyzed. He couldn’t tell whether it was fear, or whether he was being bewitched by the lazy, sweet atmosphere this predator gave off.
With a sharp fang, Yeonjun lightly scraped the skin below Subin’s collarbone.
Pok.
The thin skin was pierced, and a tiny drop of blood welled up. Yeonjun did not drive his fang in deeply; instead, he gently licked up the red bead with the tip of his tongue.
“Ah...!”
Rather than pain, it was a strange stimulus crawling up his spine that made his body jerk.
The moment Subin’s blood touched his tongue, Yeonjun’s pupils dilated wide. There was no bitter silver scent at all.
A maddeningly sweet, rich scent unique to Subin alone mingled with the blood and shook Yeonjun’s reason.
With his face buried deep in Subin’s neck, Yeonjun let out a rough breath.
“No way...”
Yeonjun murmured. More than the desire to drink blood, an obsession to swallow this human whole rose from the bottom of his chest. Subin’s trembling breath, his flushed ears, even that irresistible gaze looking back at him—all of it.
Yeonjun cupped Subin’s cheek, still imprisoned and rigid, and brought his face right up to Subin’s reddened lips.
“Just how far are you planning to provoke me?”
Yeonjun’s languid yet deeply weighted voice tangled at Subin’s ear.
Feeling his identity as a hunter shaking to its roots, Subin could not tear his gaze away, as if being sucked into the red eyes staring back at him.
