Paper airplane.
That was the beginning of our bond.

A summer when I was eight.
While spending time alone in the yard as usual
something thudded down over the wall.
A crumpled, clumsily folded paper airplane.
And then a clear, bright doorbell rang.
When I opened the door, I saw a boy who looked about my age.
He pointed at the paper airplane in my hand and said.
"That's mine."
"Ah... here."
When I handed him the airplane, you smiled brightly and pointed to the house across from ours.
"I'm Choi Yeonjun, who just moved into that house.
What's your name?"
"....Han Yeoju."
"Your name is pretty! Let's be friends."
From that day on, every day at 6 p.m. we exchanged paper airplanes.
When I unfolded the airplane marked 'To Yeoju',
it was filled with kind words written in crooked, clumsy handwriting.
And so our time kept piling up.

A summer when I was eighteen.
Time passed, and before we knew it, we were second-year high school students.
Even so, you never changed.
Every class period, you'd fold airplanes out of Post-its
and send them flying to my seat.
On the Post-its were
_Yeoju, wanna hang out after school today too?
_Let's go to the snack bar together at break time
and that was all, nothing special.
Because of it, you got scolded a lot by the teacher, but for some reason I didn't hate it.
But then
just like that, you left after a crash.
You were always jealous of the stars.
"Stars... even when they just stay still, they shine. I'm jealous."
Who could have known you'd really become a star.

I miss you.
That face, that voice
the paper airplanes, too.
I miss everything so much.
It's been years, but I miss you unbearably.
_Choi Yeonjun, I miss you.
Unlike you, now I try sending a paper airplane folded fairly skillfully
up toward the sky.
