During the few months spent preparing to open the café
I took a break from translation work for a while.
After the first project I took part in after returning to Korea
I ended up going to the publisher after a long time.
"Is that really true?
They really are making it into a movie?"
"Yes. Our series has been hot lately.
The film company got in touch.
A few of the works were shortlisted,
and they said the final decision was made yesterday.
It's the work you translated, writer."
"Wow~ that's such an honor.
That's the happiest news I've heard recently!"
"Would you like to hear even better news?"
"Even better than this?
What if I faint?ㅎ"
"The film company said that since you're the person who understands the original work
best,
they asked us to see if you could join as the adaptation writer,
and asked us to ask you.
They said they'll be contacting you as well.
I told them I'd ask you today and give them your contact information."
"An adaptation writer?
I've never done anything like that before..."
"They probably want someone who can really bring out the feel of the original,
and since you're the writer who translated it, you know that best,
so they want you to take part."
"Ah...
Can I really do it well?
I'm not confident..."
"First, have the meeting and hear them out.
Then it's not too late to decide."
"Hmm... hearing that, I guess you're right.
Okay. I'll do that."
As I left the publisher,
I remembered the thrill from when I first took on Hoonji's class.
Even then, I was trembling like this,
and I was excited about something new.
After finishing the meeting with the publisher,
I went back to the café.
Today I had decided to interview several part-time job applicants.
Since it was an office district,
I had worried there might not be any applicants,
but fortunately, I ended up meeting several people.
Since regular business starts next week,
we have to finish all the preparations within this week.
'What time was the first one again...
Oh, right, 2 o'clock.
I should have a cup of coffee before then too.'
As I made the coffee,
I suddenly remembered the joke I had made to Julian.
'Coffee tastes best when someone else makes it for you.'
Before I came back to Korea, I had stopped by Paris and wanted to
say goodbye to Julian one last time,
but Hoonji's movie schedule and my translation project overlapped,
so in the end I couldn't go.
Just as I settled in and set the coffee cup
down on the table, my phone notification rang.
[Jungah.
I'm a little free this afternoon,
can I stop by the café?]
[Yeah. I have part-time job interviews today,
so I'm out at the café too. What time?]
[I think around 5. Do you need anything?
A gift for the opening!!]
[I have everything I need.
You coming to cheer me on
is the biggest gift, so come without worrying]
[I knew you'd say that.
I'll get everything ready myself~]
'Looks like we'll get to chat for a long time today... '
Just hearing that Suyeon was coming lifted my mood.
I finished all the interviews scheduled for 2, 3, and 4 o'clock.
This was my first time doing interviews like this too,
so I was just as nervous
as the applicants were.
I wasn't sure what to ask,
or what kind of answers would make someone
a good fit.
In the end, I decided to choose based on my gut feeling.
I called the resigned student who had interviewed at 3.
"Hello? This is the café where you interviewed earlier.
I wanted to work with the dependable Jisung.
Could you start next week?"
"Really? Yes, of course.
Thank you, boss. I'll work hard."
'Boss? ㅎ That's a first for me too.'
"Yes~ Please take good care of our café from now on.
See you next week, Jisung."
"Yes. See you next week, boss.
Thank you again."
After hanging up, I sent apologies to the other two
in messages as well.
Once all the calls were done too,
I felt so much lighter.
It really felt like the café was becoming mine.
"What was going on with that friend named Miguel?"
